UNH Falls to Providence, 3-1 in Holly Young Invitational Title Game

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire volleyball team fell to Providence, 3-1 in the Holly Young Invitational Championship Game on Saturday afternoon at Lundholm Gymnasium. The set scores were 25-23, 12-25, 22-25 and 23-25.
The Wildcats drop to 3-3 overall with the loss, while the Friars improve to 6-1 overall on the season.
"First and foremost, I want to say that our team represented UNH this weekend at our home tournament with pride and a tremendous effort to represent the memory of Holly Young," said UNH head coach Christopher Feliciano. "
Senior middle blocker Abby Sullivan (Methuen, Mass.) totaled a team-high 10 kills and a .368 hitting percentage. Freshman outside hitter Shea Purcell (Shaker Heights, Ohio) added nine kills and 12 digs, along with 20-of-21 (.952) on serve receive in the losing effort.
Sophomore libero Mia Pagliarini (Springboro, Ohio) recorded a match-high 24 digs in a strong defensive outing for the 'Cats and went 20-of-21 (.952) on serve receive. while junior setter Wren Macaulay (Lake Orion, Mich.) posted 31 assists and 10 digs.
UNH hit .242 as a team with 11 kills in the third set.
"During preseason you have moments to learn things to get better, and one of the things we are noticing a trend is we push it to four sets and we just can't finish it to get it to that fifth set," said Feliciano. "It's now the third time this year, we need to make some adjustments, but I am very confident in our young group and the coaching staff to get us there."
Shaliyah Rhoden amassed a match-high 21 kills in the win for the Friars, while Emma Nelson and Emma Fink recorded 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
Rhoden from Providence was selected as the Holly Young Invitational Most Valuable Player, and was joined on the Holly Young Invitational All-Tournament Team be her teammates Allison Barber and Fink, along with Macaulay and Pagliarini from the Wildcats. Greta Stjade (Siena) and Alix Christie (FDU) were also selected to the All-Tournament Team.
The Wildcats return to action on Wednesday, September 8th at Holy Cross. Match time from the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass. is 7 p.m.
