'Cats Fall to Binghamton 3-2 in Five Sets

Three different players recorded triple-doubles in the loss
VESTAL, N.Y. — The University of New Hampshire volleyball team fell to Binghamton in a five-set match on Friday (Oct. 17) evening at the Events Center, in Vestal, N.Y. The set scores were 21-25, 25-13, 25-9, 21-25, and 15-17.
New Hampshire's offense was firing on all cylinders, as three different 'Cats recorded a triple-double in the loss. Freshman Lucy Chertock (Danville, Calif.) headlined the team's offensive output, posting a team-high 16 kills to accompany 17 digs and a pair of service aces, while junior Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) landed 10 kills and a team-leading 3.5 blocks. Junior Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) finished her night with a squad-high 24 assists to accompany 14 digs and sophomore Ellery Singleton (Menlo Park, Calif.) posted a season-high 21 assists and a career-high 11 digs.
Defensively, senior Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn.) led the team in digs, totaling 20 on the evening, while also pacing the Wildcats in service aces with four. Additionally, Dylan Hunt (Pickerington, Ohio) posted career-highs in both digs (15) and service aces (three).
Set 1
Binghamton opened the first set on a 15-12 run, paced by a pair of kills from Hannah Olmstead and Merima Smajlovic while five different 'Cats recorded a kill in the opening half of the set, headlined by a pair from Chertock. With a couple of kills from both Hunt and Chertock, the 'Cats brought the set to a 21-20 lead, but a 5-0 run from the Bearcats closed the set, giving Binghamton the 1-0 advantage.
Set 2
The Wildcats and Bearcats battled to a 9-9 score to start the second set, with Evelyn Brenton (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Lindsey Kriendler (Houston, Texas) each notching a pair of kills. UNH closed the set on a 16-4 run, powered by back-to-back service aces from Hunt and a trio of kills from senior Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind.), winning the set 25-13 and tying the match at 1-1.
Set 3
New Hampshire's offense continued their assault after falling into a 3-1 deficit to Binghamton early in the third set, exploding on a 24-6 run to close the set in a 25-9 win. UNH's output was headlined by a three-kill set from Brenton alongside a pair of kills from both Hohnbaum and senior Millie Grove (Warrington, Pa.), giving the 'Cats the 2-1 advantage.
Set 4
UNH continued to apply the pressure, taking an early 10-6 set lead before the Bearcats climbed back, going on a 10-6 run of their own to tie the point at 16-16. With a trio of kills from Smajlovic, Binghamton closed the set on a 9-5 edge to force the fifth set.
Set 5
In the final set, the Wildcats and Bearcats traded points, with neither team taking a lead greater than three, culminating in an 15-15 deadlock, powered by a trio of kills from both Grier and Chertock. With a kill from Viktoria Dimitrova, the Bearcats claimed the final set 17-15 and took the match 3-2.
Merima Smajlovic paced Binghamton's (8-11, 3-2 AE) offensive output with 16 kills and 14 digs while Alexandra Koleva finished with 25 assists and a pair of service aces and Emily Cronkhite closed with 25 digs.
