Volleyball Falls to UMBC 3-2

Three different players recorded 10+ kills in the loss
DURHAM, N.H. — The University of New Hampshire volleyball team fell to UMBC in a five-set match on Sunday (Oct. 12) afternoon at Lundholm Gymnasium. The set scores were 27-25, 21-25, 22-25, 25-20, and 8-15.
The Wildcats found offensive contributions across the roster, as three different players recorded 10+ points in the loss. Freshman Lucy Chertock (Danville, Calif.) led the team with 17 kills while both junior Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) and junior Evelyn Brenton (Glastonbury, Conn.) finished with 11 kills. Junior Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) finished her night with 33 assists and 11 digs, both team-highs.
Set 1
Both teams came out fast in the first set, with each team trading points. The 'Cats were paced early by Chertock with five kills and Brenton with four, keeping UNH deadlocked with the visiting Retrievers at 25-25. Following a pair of service errors from UMBC, the Wildcats took the first set 27-25.
Set 2
The second set was a similar story, with both the 'Cats and Retrievers trading points, leading to an 11-11 tie, led by a pair of kills from Chertock and a pair of service aces from UMBC's Serin Maden. The Retrievers outscored the Wildcats 14-10 to close the set, winning 25-21 and tying the match at 1-1. Shattles paced the 'Cats on offense with 9 assists in the second set.
Set 3
The Retrievers jumped out to a 5-2 advantage early in the third set, but the 'Cats brought it back, going on a 16-12 run to take an 18-17 set lead off four kills from Chertock and seven assists from Shattles. UMBC found momentum late in the set, closing out on an 8-4 run to win the third set 25-22.
Set 4
UNH found the early set lead, going up 11-6 with a pair of kills from Chertock and a kill from both Brenton and Grier. Both teams traded points, leading to a 20-19 edge for the 'Cats before a clutch block from Lindsey Kriendler (Houston, Texas) and Brenton set the tone for UNH, who closed out to win the fourth set 25-20, tying the match at 2-2.
Set 5
In the final set, UMBC jumped out to a 10-4 lead, with kills coming from six different players. The 'Cats comeback bid fell short after making it a 10-7 contest, as the Retrievers closed out on a 5-1 run to win the set 15-8 and take the match 3-2.
Jalynn Brown paced UMBC's (6-9, 3-1 AE) offensive output with 22 kills while Serin Maden finished with 28 assists and 10 digs and Izzy Ostvig closed with 24 assists and seven digs.
