'Cats Fight Past UAlbany in Five Set Showdown

The Wildcats improve to 2-1 in America East
DURHAM, N.H. — The University of New Hampshire volleyball team fought to a five-set win over UAlbany on Friday (Oct. 3) evening at Lundholm Gymnasium. The set scores were 22-25, 25-23, 25-18, 22-25, and 15-11.
The 'Cats were sound offensively, with four players earning double digit kills in the win over the Great Danes. Freshman Lucy Chertock (Danville, Calif.) paced the production for UNH with 17 kills, while seniors Millie Grove (Warrington, Pa.) and Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished with 15 and 14 kills, respectively.
On defense, senior Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn.) closed out with four service aces and led the team in digs, finishing the night with 22, while freshman Jannelize Perez (Orlando, Fla.) collected 18 digs and sophomore Katie Smith (Indianapolis, Ind.) earned 15 digs. Junior Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) ended her evening with 18 digs, four service aces, and a team-leading 39 assists.
"I couldn't be more proud of our team tonight," shared head coach Christopher Feliciano, "it was a great team win and it's one of those wins that I'm hoping will propel us forward as we're trying to make the playoffs and defend the crown."
Set 1
Both teams came out swinging in the first set, with each team trading points, culminating in a 23-22 UAlbany lead, before a kill from UAlbany's Tori Wilson and Shynelle Woroniuk gave the visiting Great Danes the late lead, ending in a 25-22 set win for the visitors.
Set 2
The second set saw the Great Danes jump out to a quick 3-0 lead before Shattles helped right the ship for the 'Cats, earning 13 assists and a service ace to guide UNH to a 25-23 set win, knotting the match at 1-1.
Set 3
UAlbany once again opened strong in the third set, going on an 8-4 run powered by a one kill, four assist opening from Maria Olga Siapani, however the Wildcats once again fought back, tying the affair at 14-14 before exploding on an 11-4 run to close out for the match lead.
Set 4
UNH and UAlbany traded blows to open the fourth set of the night, leading to a 22-22 deadlock fueled by two kills, 14 assists, and a pair of blocks from Siapani for the Great Danes. Following a pair of errors and a kill to close the set, the Great Danes forced sudden death.
Set 5
The Wildcats jumped on the early lead and never surrendered it, going on a 7-3 run with a pair of kills from Hohnbaum and junior Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) giving UNH the 8-5 edge. In the final plays of the match, Chertock and freshman Varvara Zververa (Korolev, Russia) each earned a pair of kills, forcing the final 15-11 decision, winning it for the 'Cats 3-2.
Woroniuk paced UAlbany (6-9, 1-2 America East) with 19 kills and 10 digs, while Siapani led the match in assists with 50 to go along with 26 digs.
