Wren Macaulay tallies career-high 43 assists in 'Cats fourth win of season
WORCESTER, Mass. -- Junior setter Wren Macaulay (Lake Orion, Mich.) posted a career-high 43 assists and four service aces with six digs in the University of New Hampshire volleyball team's 3-1 victory at Holy Cross in non-conference play on Wednesday night at the Hart Center. The set scores were 25-18, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-22.
The Wildcats improve to 4-3 overall after the win, while the Crusaders drop to 1-7 overall on the young season. UNH has now won three of the last four matches, after starting the season with a 1-2 record.
"Mid-week matches are never easy because you have to do a good job of balancing academics with athletics," said UNH head coach Christopher Feliciano. "There were a lot of moments of brilliant play tonight, but then still too many moments of not being able to finish. We are still finding our way, we are still learning, but more importantly our athletes are still hungry and are still willing to put the work in to get better."
UNH was paced offensively by senior middle blocker Abby Sullivan (Methuen, Mass.) and junior outside hitter Erin Hedrick (Montvale, N.J.) each notching a team-high 11 kills. Sullivan hit at a .556 clip, while Hedrick also finished with an impressive .550 hitting percentage and was a perfect 13-for-13 on serve receive.
Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Kaufmann (Raleigh, N.C.) recorded nine kills with a .350 hitting percentage, while senior outside hitter Kate Bilyeu (Omaha, Neb.) chipped in with seven kills on the evening.
Sophomore libero Mia Pagliarini (Springboro, Ohio) amassed 25 digs and went 19-of-20 (95%) on serve receive to lead the way for the Wildcats' defense. It marked the fourth time this season that Pagliarini has tallied 20+ digs, which includes 49 digs in her last two matches for the 'Cats.
The 'Cats hit over a .400 hitting percentage in the opening frame and the third stanza, while accumulating 16 kills in each of those two sets.
Gracyn Benck totaled a match-high 16 kills in the losing effort for the Crusaders and Mia Hofacker chipped in with 13 kills
UNH returns to action at the Dartmouth Invitational on Friday, September 10th with matches 12:30pm against Holy Cross and a 6:30pm match against the host Big Green on ESPN+.
