Hohnbaum powers Wildcats with 12 kills, .706 hitting percentage
NEWARK, N.J. — Senior Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded a match-high 12 kills on .706 hitting and junior Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) dished out 21 assists and served three aces to lead the UNH volleyball team to Sunday afternoon's straight-set sweep of NJIT at the Joel & Diane Bloom Wellness & Events Center. Set scores were 25-17, 25-20, 25-19.
The Wildcats (7-7, 1-0 America East) opened conference play with a dominant offensive performance, hitting .319 as a team and out-blocking the Highlanders, 10-4. UNH never trailed by more than two points in any set and used late runs to pull away in each frame.
"We've had a tough and challenging non-conference schedule this season, so it was rewarding to see the team use that experience to propel them to victory today," said head coach Christopher Feliciano.
Junior Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) posted nine kills, six digs, and four blocks, while freshman Lucy Chertock (Danville, Calif.) contributed a match-high 11 digs, six kills, and three blocks. Sophomore Ellery Singleton (Menlo Park, Calif.) added 19 assists, five digs and two aces.
Set 1
UNH broke a 13-13 tie with a 12-4 run to close the first set. Senior Millie Grove (Warrington, Pa.) and Grier each tallied key kills during the stretch, while Chertock added two digs. Hohnbaum capped the set with back-to-back kills, both assisted by Shattles, who had 10 assists in the frame.
Set 2
The Wildcats used a balanced attack in the second set, with five players recording kills. Grier and Chertock each notched three kills, while senior Lindsey Kriendler (Houston, Texas) and junior Evelyn Brenton (Glastonbury, Conn.) contributed at the net. UNH led 10-6 midway through and held off a late NJIT push with a service ace from Grier and a kill from Chertock to seal the set.
Set 3
UNH closed the match with a 10-4 run in the third set, highlighted by two service aces from Shattles and three kills from Grove, who finished with nine kills and two blocks.
Aries Fontaine led NJIT (3-12, 0-2 America East) with eight kills and one ace. Taylor West added five kills, while Mariana Cova led the defense with nine digs. Cece Marino and Doga Emil combined for 15 assists, and Giselle Parker contributed four kills and three blocks.
