Rachel Grier paces Wildcats with 11 kills, .625 hitting percentage
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS – The UNH volleyball team wrapped up its weekend at the Texas A&M Invitational with a three-set loss to Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday afternoon at Reed Arena. The set scores were 25-15, 25-16, 25-22.
Junior Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) led UNH (6-7) with 11 kills, hit at a .625 clip and tallied four block assists. Senior Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind.) contributed seven kills and hit .333, while junior Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) finished with 24 assists and 10 digs. Freshman Lucy Chertock (Danville, Calif.) added six kills and 10 digs, and freshman Jannelize Perez (Orlando, Fla.) chipped in with eight digs and a service ace.
Kyra McKelvey paced the Lions (7-4) with 14 kills and a .400 hitting percentage, while Abby Bailey added 12 kills and 13 points. Alexis Logarbo and Ainsley Driska combined for seven blocks, and setters Ashley Richardson and Peyton Stokley totaled 39 assists between them.
Set 1:
•The Wildcats struggled to find offensive rhythm early, hitting just .088 in the opening frame. •Grier and Hohnbaum each recorded kills to keep UNH within reach, and junior Evelyn Brenton (Glastonbury, Conn.) added a block assist.
•Southeastern Louisiana used a 7-0 run midway through the set to pull away, led by McKelvey and Driska at the net.
Set 2:
•UNH showed resolve in the second set, with Hohnbaum and Grier combining for six kills and Shattles distributing 10 assists.
•A service ace from junior Miray Su Keskin (Ankara, Turkey) and a block by Grier and Shattles helped the Wildcats close the gap to 13-12.
•The Lions responded with a 12-4 run to close the set, fueled by Abby Bailey and Alexis Logarbo.
Set 3:
•UNH hit .257 and tallied 13 kills. Chertock and Grier led the offense, while Perez chipped in a service ace and eight digs.
•The Wildcats rallied late, trimming a six-point deficit to 23-22 after kills from Hohnbaum and freshman Varvara Zvereva (Korolev, Russia), but SLU closed the match with back-to-back kills from McKelvey.
