The task of the University of New Hampshire compliance office is to ensure that coaches, staff, boosters and student-athletes remain in compliance with NCAA rules on a day-to-day basis. The coaches, staff, boosters and student-athletes at UNH have a fundamental respect for "doing things the right way" and take pride in their adherence to NCAA rules. It's a mindset at UNH that following the rules is important, which means asking questions frequently. The compliance staff strives to provide answers to questions within 24-48 hours, depending upon the complexity of the question and whether consultation with the conference office is necessary.
As a result of the department's strict observance of NCAA and conference rules and regulations, the athletics program is very successful. The University of New Hampshire is committed to the principles of institutional control in operating its athletics program, and it is the responsibility of the university administration, staff, coaching staff members, student-athletes and boosters to adhere to all regulations created for the governance of intercollegiate athletics as set forth by the NCAA and all conferences in which the university competes.
The university's commitment is to maintain control of its athletics programs through the development and implementation of appropriate institutional policies and procedures, an effective education program, and a functioning monitoring program. Each individual involved in intercollegiate athletics is obligated to maintain competency with respect to knowledge of the rules; to act within his or her realm of responsibility in full compliance with the governing legislation; and to report to the Director of Athletics any violation of NCAA, conference and/ or institutional rules of which he or she is aware.
The links within this page provide general information about NCAA rules and will be helpful, but are not meant to be a full description of what is permissible (or impermissible). The NCAA rule book is over 400 pages so even the smallest detail can change the proper application of NCAA rules. Our motto is to "ask before you act." It is much easier to help an individual or organization craft a permissible promotion, auction, or fundraiser than it is to petition to have a prospect's or student-athlete's eligibility reinstated after a violation has already occurred.
