Volleyball Falls to Binghamton 3-0

The team’s four seniors were honored before the match
DURHAM, N.H. — The University of New Hampshire volleyball team fell to Binghamton 3-0 in straight sets on Friday (Nov. 14) evening at Lundholm Gymnasium. The set scores were 18-25, 16-25, and 20-25.
Six different players earned a kill in the loss, paced by a 12 kill, 13 dig double-double from freshman Lucy Chertock (Danville, Calif.), and a 10-kill night from senior Millie Grove (Warrington, Pa.). Additionally on offense, sophomore setter Ellery Singleton (Menlo Park, Calif.) paced the team with 19 assists while junior Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) contributed 12 assists of her own. Defensively, Chertock paced the team with 13 digs while senior Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn.) finished her career with an 11-dig night.
Set 1
The Wildcats and Bearcats traded points in the early going, with Binghamton taking a 15-12 advantage midway through the opening frame, powered by four kills from Viktoria Dimitrova and three from Merima Smajlovic. Seniors Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Grove each produced a team-leading three kills while Singleton contributed five assists to open the set. The Bearcats closed out on a 10-6 run, paced by another three kills from Smajlovic, to win the opening set 25-18.
Set 2
UNH and Binghamton continued trading punches in the opening of the second set, with the Bearcats taking a 15-14 advantage into the media timeout. Smajlovic continued to lead the charge for Binghamton with five kills in the opening, while Varvara Zvereva (Korolev, Russia) paced New Hampshire with three of her own. The Bearcats closed out the second set on a 10-2 run, taking it 25-16 and bringing a 2-0 match lead into the third.
Set 3
Both offenses went back and forth again in the third set, with Binghamton once again holding a 15-14 edge midway through the frame. Smajlovic continued her strong evening, posting four kills in the stretch for the Bearcats, while Chertock and Grove kept the Wildcats in it, posting five kills and four kills, respectively. The Bearcats closed out the third set on a 10-6 scoring edge, with three kills from Smajlovic and Maya Coblentz-Brown, securing the 25-20 set win and taking the match 3-0 in straight sets.
For the Bearcats, three different players logged 10+ kills, led by Smajlovic with 19, while Kadel finished with a team-leading 39 assists and senior Emily Cronkhite finished with 12 digs.
