Volleyball Falls to Bryant 3-1

Three different players recorded 10+ digs in the loss
SMITHFIELD, R.I. — The University of New Hampshire volleyball team fell to Bryant 3-1 on Friday (Oct. 31) evening at Chace Athletic Center in Smithfield, R.I. The set scores were 17-25, 20-25, 25-20, and 24-26.
Nine different players logged a kill in the loss, paced by an 11 kill, 16 dig double-double from freshman Lucy Chertock (Danville, Calif.), posting team-highs in both categories. Additionally, junior Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) contributed 16 assists and 15 digs, logging her sixth-straight double-double and tenth of the season, while sophomore Ellery Singleton (Menlo Park, Calif.) posted nine of her own. Defensively, freshman Dylan Hunt (Pickerington, Ohio) logged 13 digs.
Set 1
The Wildcats and Bulldogs started the opening set by trading blows, culminating in an early 9-9 tie, paced by a kill and service ace from junior Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.). Bryant found momentum in the ensuing points, setting off a 15-8 run to take the first set 25-17. Arianna Ugolini led the way for the Bulldogs, posting seven kills alongside five digs, pacing the team in both categories. Grier was a bright spot for the 'Cats, totaling three kills and a service ace while Chertock logged a team-high four digs on defense.
Set 2
UNH opened the second set on a 14-11 run, with kills coming from four different players, including a trio from Chertock, before Bryant responded with five straight points to take a 16-14 advantage. The Bulldogs closed out the set by outscoring UNH 9-6, with kills coming from five different players, including a pair for Ugolini and Brookelyn Talmadge. Chertock led the Wildcats in the second frame, with three kills and a pair of digs while Grier logged three digs and LePore notched a pair of service aces.
Set 3
The 'Cats opened the third set by outscoring Bryant 12-5, led by a pair of kills from both Chertock and Varvara Zvereva (Korolev, Russia), before closing out with a 15-13 edge over the Bulldogs, taking a 25-20 set win to cut the match lead to 2-1. Senior Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Chertock paced the offensive output, logging four kills apiece, while Shattles secured six assists. Defensively, Chertock shined, collecting seven digs to help keep the Wildcats alive.
Set 4
New Hampshire continued to apply pressure on offense, opening the fourth set on a 14-8 run, powered by a three kill, one block showing from Chertock alongside a block from Grier and a one block, one kill performance from Hohnbaum. Bryant closed the set on an 18-10 run, with three kill showings from Ruth Ochelli and Kaitlin Curran, to take the fourth set 26-24 and win the match 3-1.
For the Bulldogs, Ochelli led the way on offense with 15 kills while Madison Koeller closed out with 48 assists. Defensively, four players recorded 12+ digs, paced by Carrina Barron with 23.
