Volleyball Falls Short Against UMBC

Three different players recorded 10+ digs in the loss
BALTIMORE, Md. — The University of New Hampshire volleyball team fell to UMBC 3-1 on Sunday (Nov. 9) afternoon at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena in Baltimore, Md. The set scores were 25-22, 14-25, 22-25, and 23-25.
Six different players earned a kill in the loss, paced by a 16-kill, 11-dig double-double from freshman Lucy Chertock (Danville, Calif.), and a 12-kill performance from Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind.). Additionally, junior Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) contributed 22 assists and 11 digs, logging her seventh-straight double-double and 11th of the season, while sophomore Ellery Singleton (Menlo Park, Calif.) earned 14 assists and seven digs herself. Defensively, Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn.) led the team with 14 digs while Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) earned eight total blocks on two solos and six assists.
Set 1
Neither the Wildcats nor the Retrievers could string together a consistent run of points, making New Hampshire's late 21-18 edge over UMBC the largest lead of the set. Following a late service ace from Singleton, the 'Cats took the opening set 25-22. Hohnbaum led the charge offensively with four kills, while Shattles contributed six assists and Chertock posted three kills and a pair of digs. Defensively, Grier posted a solo block alongside a pair of block assists while Dylan Hunt (Pickerington, Ohio) earned four digs.
Set 2
UMBC handled the second set, jumping out to an early 16-8 lead before taking it 25-14. Through two sets, Jalynn Brown has paced the offense for the Retrievers with 11 kills while Serin Maden logged 13 assists and a pair of service aces. For the Wildcats, Hohbaum, Chertock, and Lindsey Kriendler (Houston, Texas) each earned a pair of kills while Singleton earned five assists.
Set 3
Following an early 4-0 run to start the set for UMBC, the Wildcats clawed back within a point to make it an 18-17 contest. UNH posted a four-point run at the end of the set, holding the Retrievers at set point, but following a deflection, UMBC earned the final point, winning 25-22 and taking a 2-1 match lead. Hohnbaum led with a three-kill set while Shattles logged four assists and Chertock earned four digs.
Set 4
The Wildcats battled throughout the fourth set, tying a late 21-18 UMBC advantage at 23-23, but their comeback bid fell short, as the Retrievers closed out, winning the fourth set 25-23 and taking the match 3-1. Chertock and Shattles controlled the offense in the final frame, posting nine kills and nine assists, respectively.
For the Retrievers, three different players logged 10+ kills, led by Brown, while Maden finished with a team-leading 20 assists and junior Hannah Howard finished with 19 digs.
With the loss, the Wildcats are officially eliminated from America East playoff contention.
