Wildcats split on opening day of Dartmouth Tournament

HANOVER, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire volleyball team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the Dartmouth Invitational on Friday afternoon at Leede Arena. The Wildcats opened the day with a 3-2 win against Holy Cross and followed that up with a 3-1 loss to the host Big Green in the nightcap.
The Wildcats move to 5-4 overall with the split on the day, while Holy Cross dropped to 1-8 and Dartmouth improved to 4-0 overall.
In the early match, the 'Cats won the first two sets and fell in the second two and won the decisive fifth set by a score of 15-10.
UNH got 14 kills from sophomore middle blocker Kelly Kaufmann (Raleigh, N.C.) and 13 kills from senior middle blocker Abby Sullivan (Methuen, Mass.), while senior outside hitter Kate Bilyeu (Omaha, Neb.) notched 11 kills in the victory for the 'Cats. Kaufmann owned a .500 hitting percentage with seven digs, while Sullivan hit at a .350 clip with seven total blocks.
Junior setter Wren Macaulay (Lake Orion, Mich.) had another stellar match for the Wildcats with a career-high 44 assists, while sophomore libero Mia Pagliarini (Springboro, Ohio) led the way for the UNH defense once again with 24 digs and a perfect 18-for-18 on serve receive.
The Wildcats hit over a .300 hitting percentage as a team in the first two sets, while registering 11 and 15 kills, respectively.
Gracyn Benck amassed 16 kills, while Abbie Lane had 13 kills in the losing effort for the Crusaders.
In the late match, UNH fell to Big Green in four with UNH pulling out the second frame in that match.
Freshman outside hitter Shea Purcell (Shaker Heights, Ohio) and Sullivan each had 11 kills apiece in the loss for UNH. Sullivan hit at a .458 clip and Purcell chipped in with 10 digs. Kaufmann added seven kills, while Pagliarini notched 10 digs. Macaulay ran the Wildcats' offense with 32 assists and 15 digs.
The Wildcats hit at a .333 clip in set two with 16 kills as a team.
Ellie Blain led the way for Dartmouth with a match-high 16 kills.
UNH returns to action in the final day of the Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday, September 11th against UConn. Match time is 1 p.m. on ESPN+ from Leede Arena.
