UNH Falls to Texas State and #20 Kansas at Jayhawk Classic

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team was defeated by both Texas State and 20th-ranked University of Kansas in Friday's opening day of the Jayhawk Classic at Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena.
The set scores against Texas State were 30-28, 25-23, 20-25, 23-25, 15-12. And then against the 20th-ranked Jayhawks, the set scores were 25-16, 25-14, 25-18.
In the first match vs. Texas State, Alysa Wright (Wayne, Pa.) recorded a team-high 16 points on 12 kills and seven blocks, including one solo. Senior captain Kelly Kaufmann (Raleigh, N.C.) was next with 14.5 points on 13 kills and three blocks. Hannah Serbousek (Fort Collins, Colo.), another senior captain, finished with 12 kills and 13 points. Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind.) had 11 kills on a .357 hitting percentage.
The offense was set by the duo of Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and senior captain Camryn Honn (Overland Park, Kan.) with 28 and 24 assists, respectively. Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn.) finished with a match-high 26 digs.
Against Kansas, Serbousek recorded a team-high 9.5 points on eight kills, one service ace and a block. Kaufmann was next with 9.0 points on eight kills and two blocks. Other team leaders were Honn with 17 assists and LePore and Ezgi Karabulut (Ankara, Turkey) tied with eight digs.
UNH moved to 7-4 while Texas State improved to 6-3 and Kansas to 8-1.

vs TEXAS STATE
SET 1
- There were nine ties and six lead changes in the opening set.
- UNH reeled off seven consecutive points take a 12-6 lead; that run was fueled by Hohnbaum and Wright, as they both had a kill and combined for two blocks.
- The Wildcats led 24-22 but lost the next three points.
- UNH fended off two set points and earned another set point, 28-27, on Karabulut's kill.
- Texas State won the next three points, however, to close out the set, 30-28.
SET 2
- There were six ties and two lead changes in the second set.
- New Hampshire faced a pair of early two-point deficits but leveled the score, 5-5, on a kill by Wright.
- The Bobcats surged ahead 10-6 before UNH closed within 11-10 on a kill by Kaufmann and then pulled even at 12.
- Trailing 15-13, the Wildcats went on a 5-0 run to take an 18-15 lead. The duo of Hohnbaum and Wright once again led the way with one kill apiece and combined block.
- Texas State answered with a 5-1 spurt to retake the lead at 20-19.
- UNH fought off a set point to inch withing 24-23, but the Bobcats won the next point to win Set 2 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
SET 3
- There were only two tie scores and no lead changes in the third set.
- UNH built a 5-2 lead and extended the margin to six points, 11-5, on Hohnbaum's kill.
- LePore's kill pushed the advantage to 16-9 before Texas State trimmed the deficit to 16-13.
- The Wildcats responded with a 4-0 run, however, to reestablish a seven-point lead, 20-13.
- A 6-3 spurt by Texas State lifted the Bobcats within 23-20, but consecutive kills from Serbousek and Hohnbaum closed out the set.
SET 4
- There were 13 ties and six lead changes in the fourth set.
- Neither team led by more than two points until UNH reeled off five consecutive points to build a 23-19 lead; a Hohnbaum kill started and closed that spurt.
- Texas State fended off a pair of set points to trim the margin to 24-23, but then committed an attack error to end the set in favor of New Hampshire.
SET 5
- There were four ties and a pair of lead changes in the final set.
- In the race to 15 points, UNH surged out to a 4-1 lead.
- The Bobcats surged ahead 6-4 and extended the advantage to 9-5.
- Trailing 10-6, the Wildcats leveled the score on a 4-0 run that included kills from Kaufmann and Marisa Armer (Bradenton, Fla.).
- The teams exchanged two-point surges to advance the score to 12-12, but then Texas State won the next three points to win the set and match.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- This was the first meeting between the UNH and Texas State volleyball programs.
vs KANSAS
SET 1
- UNH won the opening point of the match on a kill by Kaufmann.
- The lead was short-lived, however, as Kansas won the next six points and never relinquished the lead in Set 1.
- After trailing by as many as eight points (12-4), the 'Cats closed within 13-9 on a kill by Hohnbaum.
- A kill by Serbousek once again trimmed the margin to four points, 17-13 before the Jayhawks went on a 6-1 run.
SET 2
- New Hampshire also won the first point of the second set on a kill by Lindsey Kriendler (Houston, Texas).
- Kansas reeled off seven consecutive points to build an 11-3 advantage.
- The 'Cats did not get closer than seven points the remainder of Set 2.
SET 3
- Kansas ran out to a 5-0 lead, but Kaufmann's kill sparked a 4-0 run that lifted UNH within 5-4.
- A combined block by Armer and Wright leveled the score at 6.
- The Jayhawks went on a 6-1 spurt to build a 12-7 advantage.
- Armer combined with Kaufmann for a block to lift the 'Cats within 15-13.
- Trailing 17-13, a kill by Kaufmann and two blocks made it a one-point set, 17-16.
- Kansas led by two points and went on a 3-0 run to take a 22-17 lead.
- After yielding a point on an attack error, the Jayhawks went on another 3-0 spurt to close the set and match.
