Kaufmann Propels 'Cats Past Bellarmine, 3-1

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Senior captain Kelly Kaufmann (Raleigh, N.C.) recorded a match-high 16 kills to lead the University of New Hampshire volleyball team to Saturday's 3-1 victory against Bellarmine University at the Jayhawk Classic at Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena on Saturday.
The set scores were 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 26-24.
With UNH trailing 24-20 in Set 4, Kaufmann recorded consecutive kills, and then a block assist to give the Wildcats a 25-24 lead and another kill to end the set and match. In addition to the 16 kills on a .345 hitting percentage, Kaufmann finished with three blocks for a total of 17.5 points.
Ezgi Karabulut (Ankara, Turkey) was next with nine kills, three blocks and three service aces for 13.5 points. Senior captain Camryn Honn (Overland Park, Kan.) led all players with 26 assists and also contributed three aces and two kills. Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn.) finished with a match-high 17 digs.
UNH improved to 8-5 overall and Bellarmine fell to 2-10.

- UNH returns to action Saturday, Sept. 23 (6 p.m.) for Jill Hirschinger Day against Dartmouth College. The Wildcats will honor the legendary volleyball coach and her conference championship teams.
SET 1
- UNH inched out to a 7-4 lead on a combined block by Alysa Wright (Wayne, Pa.) and Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind.).
- Back-to-back kills by Kaufmann gave the 'Cats an 11-7 advantage.
- The margin increased to five points, 13-8, before Bellarmine rallied to tie the score, 15-15.
- Kills from Marisa Armer (Bradenton, Fla.) and Hannah Serbousek (Fort Collins, Colo.) helped UNH surge back in front, 18-15.
- With the score tied at 20, a block by Kaufmann and Karabulut followed by Serbousek's service ace gave UNH a 22-20 lead.
- Kaufmann's next kill put the 'Cats ahead 23-22, but the Knights won the next three points to take the opening set, 25-23.
SET 2
- New Hampshire raced out to a 4-0 lead but the Knights answered with a 6-1 run to take a 6-5 lead.
- Millie Grove (Warrington, Pa.) capped a 4-1 spurt with a kill to give the Wildcats a 9-7 advantage.
- A kill by Lindsey Kriendler (Houston, Texas) pushed the margin to five points, 17-12 and Hohnbaum's kill made it a six-point differential at 21-14.
- Trailing 24-20, Bellarmine fended off three set points to close within 24-23 but, following a UNH timeout, the 'Cats ended the set and leveled the match on Karabulut's kill.
SET 3
- Back-to-back kills by Karabulut and Kriendler propelled UNH to a 4-0 lead.
- A kill by Grove and ace from Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) extended the margin to 8-2.
- Leading 11-8, UNH called time out and won the next two points to advance the score to 13-8.
- The advantage once again grew to six points, 16-10, on Kaufmann's kill.
- Karabulut's next kill gave UNH a 19-12 advantage and prompted Bellarmine to call time out.
- Trailing 22-14, Bellarmine went on a 7-0 run to close within one point, 22-21.
- A kill by Serbousek kept the 'Cats in front and, following a Knight's attack error, Karabulut served an ace to end the set, 25-21.
SET 4
- A kill by Kaufmann and ace from Honn helped give UNH an early 3-0 lead.
- Bellarmine rallied to take a 9-5 lead, at which point the 'Cats called a timeout.
- Serbousek's kill trimmed the deficit to 10-8 and her next kill once again made it a two-point margin, 11-9.
- UNH inched within one point, 12-11, but the Knights won the next three points to remain in front and prompt the 'Cats to call another timeout at 15-11.
- After falling behind 21-16, three Bellarmine errors allowed UNH to pull within 21-19.
- The Knights responded with a 3-1 spurt to take a 24-20 lead.
- Kaufmann recorded back-to-back kills to advance the score to 24-22 and Armer's block leveled the score at 24.
- Armer and Kaufmann combined for a block to give UNH match point, and the Wildcats capped the comeback and match-ending 6-0 run on another Kaufmann kill.
