Ski Places Third at Bates Carnival in 2023 Season Opener

Scott Schulz finishes third in 10K skate.
RUMFORD, Maine – Senior Scott Schulz (Lake Placid, N.Y.) finished third in the 10K skate on Saturday at Black Mountain to lead the UNH ski team on the final day of the Bates Carnival.
UNH placed third overall out of 14 teams at the three-day Carnival with 725 points. Vermont won with 826 points, while Dartmouth was second (797), Middlebury was fourth (682) and Colby was fifth (603).

RESULTS
The men's team was third in the 10K skate with 98 points led by Schulz's third-place finish and 44 points with a time of 23:28.7. Junior Seth Wyatt (Bozeman, Mont.) posted 33 points by placing 10th (24:12.9) and junior James Schneider (Plymouth, Minn.) tallied 21 points (23rd, 25:00.2).
On the women's side, the Wildcats placed fourth in the 10K skate with 85 points. Junior Lea Stabaek Wenaas (Oslo, Norway) led UNH with a sixth-place finish and 37 points with a time of 28:33.5. Freshman Hattie Barker (Underhill, Vt.) notched 35 points (seventh, 28:46.9), while freshman Emma Charles (Farmington, Maine) recorded 13 points (35th, 30:58.8).
Over at Sunday River, the women's alpine team was third in the slalom with 95 points. Sophomore Zoe Michael (Sydney, Australia) secured 41 points by placing fourth in a combined time of 1:39.95. Freshman Hedda Martelleur (Uppsala, Sweden) also finished in the top 10 at eighth for 33 points (1:40.51), while senior Emma Kearing (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) captured 21 points (21st, 1:42.53).
The men were led by freshman Isac Hedstrom (Are, Sweden) as he totaled 37 points (sixth, 1:27.21) as the team was fifth with 75 points. Junior Peder Nersnaes (Oslo, Norway) tallied 26 points (14th, 1:28.10) and graduate student Max Bervy (Vail, Colo.) posted 12 points (33rd, 1:31.03).

- The Wildcats return to action on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 20-21 at the St. Michael's Carnival. The Nordic team will take on the competition at Sleepy Hallow and the Alpine team will compete at Smugglers' Notch.
