DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire volleyball team treks to Boston, tussling with Northeastern University for non-conference action Tuesday, Sept. 1 (7 p.m.).
THE STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE: UNH is coming off a 1-2 weekend at the Rambler Classic. The Wildcats fell in matches against Loyola University Chicago (1-3; 25-18, 28-30, 23-25, 23-25) and Northwestern University (0-3; 12-25, 14-25 and 14-25). New Hampshire bounced back in the last match of the tournament against Wake Forest, downing the Demon Deacons in four sets (15-25, 25-19, 25-21 and 29-27).
Junior middle blocker Demi Muses (Orangevale, Calif.) recorded 30 kills, 31 digs and 10 blocks in the four-team tournament, earning All-Tournament honors for her efforts. In the win against the Deacs, Muses racked up 18 kills, eight blocks and seven digs.
Muses leads the Wildcats with 2.73 kills and 2.82 digs per set through three matches. Senior outside hitter Tori Forrest (Powder Springs, Ga.) ranks second on the squad in kills per set, registering 2.64. Junior setter Keelin Severtson (Delray Beach, Fla.) commands the New Hampshire offense with 6.55 assists per set. Senior defensive specialist Madison Lightfoot (Clarkston, Mich.) anchors the Wildcats' backcourt with 4.50 digs per set. As a team, UNH is holding its opponents to a .212 attack percentage.
SCOUTING NORTHEASTERN: The Huskies enter Tuesday's tilt looking for their first win of the year. Northeastern was unable to muster a victory at the Falcon Classic, hosted by the U.S. Air Force Academy. In day one action, the Huskies fell in straight sets to New Mexico State University (21-25, 13-25, 23-25) and Arizona State University (16-25, 14-25, 17-25). On the second day, NU dropped four-set decisions to Air Force (15-25, 25-19, 24-26, 13-25) and the University of Montana (25-23, 14-25, 20-25, 23-25).
Sophomore setter Jamie Bredahl directs the offense by dishing out 4.77 assists per set. Freshman libero Gabrielle Eyl anchors the backline, recording 3.43 digs per set. As a team, Northeastern lands 8.86 kills per set and limits its opponents to hit .245. The Huskies are coached by Ken Nichols, who enters his 16th season at the helm.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. NORTHEASTERN: The Wildcats and Huskies are familiar New England rivals as the two teams clash for the 44th time in the career series. Northeastern, a member of the Colonial Athletic Conference (2006-present), is a former affiliate of the America East Conference (1979-2005). New Hampshire leads the series against Northeastern with a record of 23-20. However, the last Wildcat triumph against the Huskies dates back to Sept. 22, 2009 (3-1; 9-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-14).
POWER 5 TEAM GOES DOWN: New Hampshire's triumph over Wake Forest was the first-win against an ACC opponent since Sept. 21, 2002 against North Carolina State University.
RELOADED: The 'Cats welcome back six starters from their championship squad. The returners consist of senior outside hitter Abby Brinkman (Brecksville, Ohio), senior middle blocker Cassidy Croci (Sylvania, Ohio), senior right side hitter Brenna Buckwalter (Evergreen, Colo.), Forrest, Lightfoot and Muses.
FIVE-TIME CHAMPS: The Wildcats secured the America East title on their home court for the second straight year after defeating the University at Albany in four sets on Nov. 22, 2014 (25-22, 19-25, 27-25 and 25-13). UNH has won its conference crown five times, all under the tutelage of head coach Jill Hirschinger. Additionally, all five titles of the program's titles have been won at Lundholm Gymnasium.
HIRSCHINGER BY THE NUMBERS: In 36 years as a head coach, Hirschinger is one if just 12 active coaches that have recorded 700 wins or more. She recorded win No. 700 on Sept. 20, 2014 against the University of Rhode Island in a five-set battle. Already the program's most winningest coach, Hirschinger earned her 300th career win at UNH when the team captured a four-set win over Binghamton University on Nov. 2, 2014.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE CLUB: Senior outside hitter Tori Forrest racked up 10 double-doubles to lead the team in 2014. She looks to eclipse that figure as she posted a double-double performance of 13 kills and 14 digs in the four-set defeat at Loyola University Chicago.
MILESTONE WATCH: Continuing her ascent of the UNH leaderboard, Lightfoot is currently ranked third in program history with 1,264 digs. The defensive specialist became the ninth player in program history to register 1,000 career digs, achieving the milestone on Oct. 3, 2014 against Binghamton University in a five-set win (24-26, 25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 15-7). In addition, Lightfoot's 560 digs last season tied the program's single-season record. Forrest is also close to reaching a milestone mark. The senior is 23 kills away from becoming the eighth player in UNH volleyball history to reach the 1,000-kill plateau.
DUE NEXT: New Hampshire remains on the road, competing at the Fairfield University Invitational. The four-team tournament features Marshall University (Sept. 4, 4 p.m.), the College of the Holy Cross (Sept. 5; 10 a.m.) and the host Stags (Sept. 5; 8 p.m.). UNH debuts at Lundholm Gymnasium on Tuesday, Sept. 8 against Bryant University to start a four-match homestand.
