Joshua Hoffman, a sophomore from Litchfield, N.H. on the UNH men's track and field team, tied for the highest number of male Service Credit Union Student-Athlete of the Week awards in the 2021-22 academic year. He tied with teammate Kevin McGrath with three accolades.
Joshua received the Service Credit Union Student-Athlete of the Week award three times during the outdoor track & field season.
Joshua received his first Service Credit Union Student-Athlete of the Week honor April 4 in recognition of winning one event and finishing as runner-up in another event at the Wildcat Invitational I. Joshua bested the field of eight competitors with a throw of 51.14 meters in the discus. Two of his other throws – 49.42 and 49.38 – were also better than the runner-up's mark. Joshua placed second in the shot put with an effort of 14.36m; he recorded that mark in the third of six rounds.
Joshua was honored again as the Service Credit Union Student-Athlete of the Week on May 9, following a school record-breaking and silver medal effort in the discus at the 2022 America East Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He was atop the leaderboard of the 19 entrants in the discus through the first three rounds and extended that lead with a school record mark of 179 feet, 1 inch in Round 4. A thrower from UAlbany bested the conference record in Round 6 to knock Joshua out of the top spot.
Joshua supplanted the UNH benchmark of 173-1 established by Reed Liset in 2007. Joshua’s school-record throw of 179-1 also bested his previous best of 172-2 set this past April at the College of the Holy Cross.
He also placed 14th in the shot put at the America East championship meet with a mark of 44-11.5.
Joshua won the gold medal and broke his school record in the discus at the New England Outdoor Championships to earn the Service Credit Union Student-Athlete of the Week award May 16.
Joshua bested the field of 21 other competitors in the discus with a throw of 185-3 that he recorded in the last of six rounds. That mark supplanted his school record of 179-1 established one week earlier at the America East Championships.
Joshua was the leader through all six rounds at New Englands. He sat atop the leaderboard in Round 1 with a throw of 167-9 and increased his lead over the rest of the field with a distance of 172-2 in Round 2. That remained the top throw of the day until Joshua’s school record-breaking effort of 185-3 in Round 6.
That benchmark distance was a qualifying effort for the NCAA East Prelims.
