Sullivan, Hush Score Wildcat goals
DURHAM, N.H. — Freshman Kate Sullivan (Hingham, Mass.) scored her first career goal and senior Alyson Hush (Scarborough, Ontario) also notched a goal, but the visiting Mercyhurst Lakers spoiled the UNH women's hockey team's season opener Thursday night with a 3-2 victory in the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex.
Julia Schalin tallied a goal and an assist for Mercyhurst (1-2-0), which erased a pair of one-goal deficits to win in come-from-behind fashion.
The Wildcats held the lead through the opening frame, outshooting the Lakers 12-9 and killing off two penalties.
Mercyhurst responded with a pair of goals in the second period. Seconds after UNH killed off a power play, Payten Evans took advantage of a shift change and broke in unimpeded to tie the game with an unassisted goal at 4:41.
Schalin answered just 26 seconds later on a backhander, assisted by Avery Bryk and Regina Metzler to knot the score at 2–2.
The game-winner came midway through the third period on a power play, as Makayla Javier redirected Schalin's wrister from the left faceoff circle at 6:08. Maja Alenius added a secondary assist.
UNH had two power-play opportunities in the final frame but couldn't convert, despite a 13–1 shot advantage in the period.
Junior goaltender Sedona Blair (Eden Prairie, Minn.) made 21 saves; Mercyhurst's Magdalena Luggin stopped 28 shots for Mercyhurst, including 13 in the third period to preserve the win.

For UNH (0-1-0), two other freshmen had a hand in Sullivan's goal at 2:23 of the first. Kristen Hartman (Newmarket, Ontario) applied pressure behind the goal line, compelling Laker defenseman Sofia Ljung to release the puck along the boards. Freshman Josie Linn (Excelsior, Minn.) slid in for a takeaway and quickly fed Sullivan in front for the season's first goal.First goal of the season scored by Kate Sullivan!!@ESPNPlus ➡️ https://t.co/6bqkGp8eff
