Wildcats Roll to 24-6 Win vs. UAlbany

DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore running back Denzell Gibson (Bellwood, Ill.), sophomore wide receiver Ryan Blagg (Westford, Mass), and sophomore quarterback Matt Vezza (Elmhurst, Ill.) each scored a touchdown in the University of New Hampshire football team's 24-6 victory against UAlbany on Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium.
Vezza was an efficient 19 of 24 for 190 yards and a six-yard touchdown and also rushed 12 times for 12 yards and a three-yard TD. Grad student wide receiver Chase Wilson (Lake Charles, La.) was the top receiver with four catches for 74 yards. Senior running back Myles Thomason (Montclair, N.J.) had a team-high 77 rushing yards on 16 carries.
Grad student safety Duncan Moreland (Beverly, Mass) and senior cornerback Zeroun Skinner (Orlando, Fla.) led the Wildcats with five tackles apiece and Skinner was credited with 1.5 tackles for loss. Freshman corner Kelby Hampton (Philadelphia, Pa.) recorded the only takeaway in the game with an interception.
UNH improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in CAA Football while UAlbany moved to 1-4, 0-1.

FIRST QUARTER
- UNH received the opening kickoff and converted 4th-and-1 at the UNH 34 with a 25-yard run by Thomason. Vezza extended the drive on another 4th-and-1 at the UA 15, and four plays later Gibson ran up the middle for a one-yard touchdown. Nick Reed (Harrison, N.Y.) kicked the extra point to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead at 7:10 of the first quarter.
- It was a 15-play, 75-yard opening drive that consumed 7:50 off the clock
- Through 15 minutes, UNH led 7-0 with a 108-21 edge in yards and 11:21 in time of possession.
SECOND QUARTER
- UAlbany kicker James Bozek missed a 32-yard field goal wide right to keep the score 7-0 in favor of the 'Cats at 12:53.
- With 28 seconds left in the first half, Vezza connected with Ryan Blagg (Westford, Mass) on a six-yard pass into the end zone and Reed's PAT extended the UNH lead to14-0 lead heading into halftime.
- The 16-play, 91-yard scoring drive marked UNH's longest of the season with regards to plays and time of possession (8:06).
THIRD QUARTER
- Pinned at their three-yard line, the Wildcats went 97 yards in 12 plays on their first possession of the third quarter. Vezza powered up the middle on a three-yard run into the end zone and Reed followed with a successful extra point to push New Hampshire's advantage to 21-0 with 5:24 remaining in the third quarter.
- To that point, UNH's defense limited the Great Danes to 100 yards of offense on 26 plays (five possessions).
FOURTH QUARTER
- On the first play of the fourth quarter, Hampton intercepted Colin Parachek's pass at the UNH 7 and had a 23-yard return to set up 1st-and-10 for the Wildcats at the UNH 30.
- On the next Great Danes' possession the visitors did not convert on 4th-and-5 from the UA 15 as T.J. Farrell (Walpole, Mass.) forced Parachek to throw the ball away.
- Reed made a field goal from 47 yards to extend New Hampshire's lead 24-0 with 8:29 left in the game.
- Parachek connected with Alex Jreige on a left-side pass for six yards for a UAlbany touchdown with 3:08 on the clock.
- UNH recovered the onsides kick but were held to a 3-and-out. The Great Danes marched to the UNH 42, but Jordan Macallister (South Orange, N.J.) forced an errant throw on fourth down to turn possession back to the 'Cats with 21 seconds on the clock.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Blagg's touchdown was his first career catch.
- Hampton recorded his first career interception. He was also credited with a career-high three tackles (all solo).
- Both Gibson and Vezza have four career rushing TDs.
- Reed has made 11 of 13 field goal attempts (84.6%) this season. He is a perfect 2-for-2 from 40-49 yards and is 5 of 6 on all attempts of 40+ yards (3-for-4 from 50+).
- Matt Guidebeck (North Reading, Mass.) averaged 47.0 yards on three punts with a career long of 59; he pinned UAlbany inside the UA 20 twice.
- Moreland is now UNH's active career leader in tackles with 95.
- The six points marked the fewest given up by UNH this season and the 'Cats held an opponent below 100 rushing yards (94) for the first time this season.
