Perius scores two goals, Javier notches three assists and Bach earns shutout in debut
DURHAM, N.H. — Julia Perjus scored a pair of goals, Makayla Javier registered three assists, and Tara Bach made 25 saves to post a shutout in her college debut as Mercyhurst skated to a 4-0 non-conference victory against the UNH women's hockey team Friday afternoon in the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex.
The Lakers swept the two-game series to improve to 2-2-0 on the season, while the Wildcats slipped to 0-2-0.
UNH junior netminder Noemi Martinez (Glen Ridge, N.J.) made 23 saves, and freshman Aurora Kahlert (Maple Ridge, British Columbia) led the Wildcats with nine shots and four shots on goal.
First Period
•Mercyhurst got on the board at 13:50 of the first on Maja Alenius' first goal of the season. Nayeon Kim skated into the UNH zone along the right wing and dropped a pass to Javier, who centered the puck perfectly on Alenius' tape for a forehand tap-in.
Second Period
•The Lakers increased the lead to 2-0 at 14:48 of the second. Berlin Lolacher won a right-side faceoff back to Javier, who passed to Jade Maissoneuve at the top of the circle. Maissoneuve then blistered a glove-side one-timer for her first goal of the season.
•It took only 22 seconds for MU to up the advantage to 3-0. Lexi Stanat cleared the puck off the far boards of the Laker zone, springing a 2-on-1 rush. Kim set up Perjus for a short-side left-wing bid that Martinez initially turned aside. Perjus, though, dug the loose puck from just under Martinez's right pad to backhand in her third goal of the season at 15:10.
Third Period
•Mercyhurst made it 4-0 at 7:36 of the third on Perjus' second of the game and team-leading fourth of the season. Javier, who received a left-side neutral-zone pass from Jess Ciarrocchi, weaved to her right upon entering the Wildcat zone and fed the oncoming Perjus in the right circle for her third assist and the game's final tally.
•Neither team scored on special teams: Mercyhurst was 0-for-3 on the power play and UNH was 0-for-2.
•The Wildcats totaled 50 shots to the Lakers' 45. MU had 27 shots on goal, while the 'Cats finished with 25 SOG.
