UNH Skates to 5-1 Border Battle Exhibition Win vs. Maine

DURHAM, N.H. — Sophomore Addison Spitz (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and juniors Sydney Leonard (St. Bonifacius, Minn.) and Julia Cabral (Lee, N.H.) each tallied two points as the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team rolled past the University of Maine, 5–1, in Saturday afternoon's exhibition Border Battle, presented by Buffalo Wild Wings, in the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex.
Spitz and Cabral both finished with a goal and an assist while Leonard was credited with two assists.
Junior goaltender Sedona Blair (Eden Prairie, Minn.) stopped all 14 shots she faced, and sophomore Vera Lee (Seoul, South Korea) posted nine saves on 10 shots.
After falling behind early, the Wildcats responded with five unanswered goals, including three in a dominant second period that turned the tide.
First Period
•Maine opened the scoring at 7:46 when Lila Shea found the back of the net off assists from Raegan Wurm and Paige Fong.
•UNH answered late in the frame at 18:29, as Spitz was set up by Leonard and Cabral to tie the game, 1–1.
Second Period
•UNH exploded for three goals in a span of just over four minutes. Junior Danika Botterill (Portage La Prairie, Minn.) gave the Wildcats their first lead at 2:11 with an unassisted even-strength goal. Just 14 seconds later, Spitz's shot rang off the crossbar but Cabral scored off the rebound. Sophomore Addison Finn (Stillwater, Minn.) capped the surge at 6:26, finishing a feed from Leonard to make it 4–1.
Third Period
•Freshman Nina Rossi (Pittsgrove, N.J.) added a power-play goal at 5:21, assisted by freshman Aurora Kahlert (Maple Ridge, British Columbia) and senior assistant captain Alyson Hush (Scarborough, Ontario), sealing the 5–1 victory.
NEXT UP • VS MERCYHURST, SEPT. 25 (6 P.M.) AND SEPT. 26 (12:30 P.M.)
•UNH opens the regular season with two home games against Mercyhurst in the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex.
