'Cats Fall to Vermont, 2-1, in Conference Opener

Chloe DeLyser scores for the ‘Cats
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Graduate student forward Chloe DeLyser (Marion, N.Y.) scored for the Wildcats, but the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team fell to Vermont, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Virtue Field in the America East opener for the Wildcats.
The 'Cats fall to 2-4-3 (0-1-0 AE), while the Catamounts improve to 3-3-4 (1-0-1 AE).

- The 'Cats return to action on Thursday, Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. on ESPN+ when they take on UMass Lowell at Wildcat Stadium for Stratham Parks & Rec Youth Night. After the game the Wildcats will be signing autographs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Wildcats took the first shot on goal in the eighth minute when sophomore midfielder Brooke Pearson (Plainville, Conn.) sent a shot from 12 yards out that was saved by UVM goalkeeper Kylee Carafoli.
- Junior goalkeeper Sonja Zeepvat (Mendham, N.J.) made a big save in the 16th minute when she tipped a shot by Della Weir over the bar to keep the game tied at 0-0.
- In the 46th minute, senior forward Abbi Maier (Cincinnati, Ohio) sent an outstanding pass to Pearson who one-timed a shot from six yards out, but Carafoli was able to keep the ball out of the net.
- The Catamounts took a 1-0 lead in the 64th minute (63:46) when Lauren DeGroot scored on a shot to the lower left corner of the net from 15 yards out.
- UVM extended its advantage to 2-0 in 79th minute (78:02) as Madeline Gardner blasted a shot from 18 yards out to the upper right corner of the net.
- With just 23 seconds left, DeLyser controlled a pass from freshman back Abby Beasley (Fishers, Ind.) and then volleyed the ball out of the air from 22 yards out to the upper left corner of the net for the spectacular goal. The goal was her first of the season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- UVM outshot UNH, 23-17, while the Catamounts posted 10 shots on goal and the Wildcats recorded eight.
- The Wildcats attempted five corner kicks and the Catamounts took four.
- Zeepvat totaled eight saves for UNH, while Carafoli made seven saves.
