2023 Volleyball Recruiting Class Includes Two Transfers and Five Freshmen
DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball head coach Christopher Feliciano announced Wednesday afternoon the addition of seven student-athletes for the upcoming fall 2023 season.
The Wildcats have added one libero in Miray Su Keskin (Ankara, Turkey), one outside hitter in Ezgi Karabulut (Ankara, Turkey), one setter in Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) four middle blockers in Krista Haake (Clarksville, Tenn.), Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.), Evelyn Brenton (Glastonbury, Conn.), and Alysa Wright (Wayne, Pa.).
Coach Feliciano on the incoming recruiting class: "We are extremely excited to welcome the 2023 recruiting class to Lundholm Gymnasium. We are adding skill, athleticism, physicality, and experience as the chase for our 8th championship in school history is on."
Miray Su Keskin - 5'6 / Libero / Ankara, Turkey / Turkish Volleyball Federation Sports Club / TED Ankara College Sports Club
Su Keskin, who will be coming to Durham in the fall as an undeclared undergraduate student, travels to campus from her home of Ankara, Turkey where she played for the Turkish Volleyball Federation Sports Club as well as the TED Ankara College Sports Club. Her experience attending the Turkish National Team camps as well as winning multiple regional championships with her club team makes her a great addition to the recruiting class.
"Miray is a talented libero with elite ball control, whose international experience will benefit our gym," said Feliciano. "Her ability to absorb hard-driven swings with precision will allow us to be in our system more. When that happens, we can execute our offense with more proficiency."
Ezgi Karabulut - 5'10 / Outside Hitter / Ankara, Turkey / University of South Alabama
Karabulut, who will be a computer science major when she arrives on campus in the fall, comes from the University of South Alabama as a junior. While at South Alabama, she appeared in 34 matches in which she recorded 74 kills, nine assists, 10 service aces, 102 digs, and three block assists.
"Like Miray, she has elite ball control that will benefit our FBSO game (first ball side out). Her passing and ball control on defense will alleviate pressure on our setting group," said Feliciano.
Jessica Shattles - 5'10 / Setter / Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. / OTVA Volleyball Club
Shattles will be a Business Administration and Sport Management dual-major when joins the team in the fall. Aside from a long list of academic and athletic accomplishments while in the club volleyball circuit and in high school, her sister, Tori Forrest, was a three-time America East champion when she competed for the UNH volleyball team from 2012-15. Shattles is one of the top setter recruits in the country coming out of high school and has been named to many all-tournament teams, all-regional teams, as well as winning first place at tournaments such as the Nike Tournament of Champions, Triple Crown NIT, and the Florida High School State Championships. She is one of 12 setters in the country to be named to the MaxPreps Pre-Season All-American First and Second teams and was one of 12 players selected to represent Team Florida at the USAV All Star Championships.
"Jessica has been ranked as one of the top setters in the country coming out of high school in 2023. She's quick, driven, competitive, and has a tremendous volleyball IQ," said Feliciano. "We are excited to see her compete in our gym with the hope that she can replicate the same success that she's had over her club and high school career."
Krista Haake - 6'2 / Middle Blocker / Clarksville, Tenn. / Alliance Volleyball Club
Haake, who will be a biology major entering her freshman year at UNH, was named the district 13AAA MVP in Tennessee as well as a member of the 13AAA All-District Team, District 13AAA All-Tournament Team, and was named The Leaf-Chronicle's All-Area Player of the Year.
"Krista is a player who we are excited to welcome to our program. I believe that she can play both the middle and right sides," said Feliciano. "We believe that she has a high ceiling and with her tremendous work ethic, her time may come sooner than later."
Rachel Grier - 6'4 / Middle Blocker / Dublin, Calif. / Norcal Volleyball Club
Grier, a political science major as an incoming freshman here at UNH, is a two-time Second Team All-EBAL honoree, a First Team ALL-EBAL selection, as well as a three-time scholar-athlete during her high school career in California.
"Rachel has an opportunity to impact our gym from day one," said Feliciano. "Once she gets acclimated to the speed of the game at the Division 1 level, the staff and I believe that Rachel can be a major point scorer in the America East."
Evelyn Brenton - 6'2 / Middle Blocker/Hitter / Glastonbury, Conn. / Husky Volleyball
Brenton, a business major arriving on campus in the fall, had 256 kills, 31 aces, and 70 blocks during her senior campaign as the captain of Glastonbury high school's girls' volleyball team. She earned first and second-team All-State honors as well as being named to the All-Conference team twice.
"Evelyn has an explosive first step on both her approach and blocking movements. That, coupled with her desire to be great will push the other middles in our gym," said Feliciano.
Alysa Wright - 6'2 / Middle Blocker / Wayne, Pa. / Bryant University
Wright is the final newcomer, transferring from America East opponent, Bryant University, as she pursues her graduate degree in business. While at Bryant, she was named to the America East All-Conference First Team a season ago, as well as the Northeast Conference All-Conference Second Team.
"Alysa is a point-scoring machine as she averaged 3.6 points per game last season in America East play. We hope that in our system, she can potentially top those numbers," said Feliciano.
The Wildcats' incoming recruiting class helps build on a roster that made it to the America East Championship game for the first time since 2016 a season ago.
