Cane Scores PK Goal in 2-1 Loss at Boston U.

BOSTON – Senior Julie Cane (Titusville, N.J.) scored her first goal of the season, but the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team lost 2-1 to Boston University at Nickerson Field on Sunday afternoon.
Cane scored on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute to lift the Wildcats within 2-1. Senior goalkeeper Cat Sheppard (Nesconset, N.Y.) made two saves.
Jenna Oldham scored both BU goals, including one on a PK in the 60th minute. Starting goalie Gretchen Bennett stopped both shots on goal that she faced in the first half to get the win. Celia Braun was credited with three saves in the second half.
UNH is now 2-4-1 overall and BU is 3-4-1.

FIRST HALF
- UNH recorded a 7-5 shot advantage, including 2-1 on goal, but the home team scored the only goal in the opening 45 minutes.
- BU earned the first corner kick of the game in the second minute, and that produced the first shot of the game, a header by Ashley Buck that went wide.
- UNH's first shot of the game off the foot of Cane sailed high in the seventh minute.
- The Wildcats continue to pressure, and the next shot by Cane was saved by Bennett
- In the ninth minute, freshman Meghan Guarente (Sewell, N.J.) was also denied by Bennett.
- One minute later, sophomore Emily Bini (Guilderland, N.Y.) fired a shot wide of the cage.
- The Terriers took a 1-0 lead on Oldham's goal at 29:55. Julianna Stureman was credited with the assist.
- The 'Cats generated their first corner in the 37th minute, but it did not produce a shot.
- UNH pressured in the closing seconds of the half and sophomore Keegan Mayer (Summit, N.J.) shot the ball off target.
SECOND HALF
- New Hampshire earned a corner in the opening minute following the halftime break, and the header by sophomore Ella Dudley (St. Augustine, Fla.) was snared by Braun.
- The Wildcats generated another corner in the 50th minute, and this time senior Jamie Irwin (Roxbury, N.J.) sent a shot wide.
- UNH sustained pressure and Bini's blocked shot led to another corner, which in turn led to Cane's header that was stopped by Braun but yielded yet another corner.
- BU weathered that Wildcat storm, however, and Oldham converted a penalty kick into a goal and 2-0 lead at 59:11.
- The 'Cats were awarded a penalty kick at Cane found the back of the net to trim the deficit to 2-1 at 62:56.
- UNH continued to press, and Bini was turned aside by Braun in the 65th minute.
- On New Hampshire's sixth corner of the game, the service by sophomore Anna Hewlett (Webster, N.Y.) was headed high by Dudley.
- Guarente blasted a shot high in the 74th minute, and that proved to be the last shot attempt by both teams.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- UNH record the edge in both shots (16-11), including 6-4 on goal, and corner kicks (6-4).
- Cane finished with a game-high four shots.
- Bini and freshman Abbie Burgess (Killingly, Conn.) both had three shots.
- Including Sheppard, five Wildcats played the full 90 minutes.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- New Hampshire played its second road game in four days. The Wildcats prevailed 1-0 at Siena College (Loudonville, N.Y.) last Thursday.
- The 'Cats are midway through a stretch of four consecutive road games.
- Sheppard and sophomore back Alivia Kelly (Pembroke, Mass.) are the two 'Cats who have played every minute this season.
- UNH has scored five goals this season, each by a different Wildcat.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 7-16-1 lifetime record against Boston University.
