UNH Upended 2-0 In America East Opener at Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford women's soccer team scored a goal late in the first half and another early in the second half to record a 2-0 victory against the University of New Hampshire at Al-Marzook Field on Sunday afternoon.
UNH senior goalkeeper Cat Sheppard (Nesconset, N.Y.) was credited with one save. Hartford goalie Maia Perez stopped two shots. Christina Stone and Chloe Layne were the goal scorers.
UNH is now 2-5-1 overall and 0-1-0 in America East. Hartford improved to 6-1-0, 1-0-0.

FIRST HALF
- Hartford recorded a 4-2 shot advantage with a 3-1 edge in corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.
- New Hampshire generated the first pressure in the game with a corner kick in the fourth minute, but it did not produce a shot.
- Hartford's corner in the 14th minute led to Kelly Severini's dangerous shot to the upper-right corner, but Sheppard made a leaping save.
- Sophomore Anna Hewlett (Webster, N.Y.) sent a shot wide right in the 15th minute and freshman Meghan Guarente (Sewell, M.J.) struck a shot wide of the left post in the 19th minute.
- The Hawks took a 1-0 lead at 40:22 when Sheppard stopped Tristan McFarlane's initial shot but Stone deposited the rebound into the net.
SECOND HALF
- UNH recorded the first shot of the second half when Hewlett sent the ball over the crossbar in the 47th minute.
- Layne was the opportunist of a Wildcats' defensive miscue to score and extend the home team's lead to 2-0 at 60:53.
- In the 72nd minute, freshman Abbie Burgess (Killingly, Conn.) fired a shot out top, and one minute later Guarente's shot to the bottom middle of the cage was stopped by Perez.
- UNH pressed late in the game and generated a corner kick in the 86th minute that led to a shot by sophomore Ande Allison (Carlisle, Ohio) that was wide of the frame.
- The 'Cats sustained pressure and the offering by senior Julie Cane (Titusville, N.J.) was also stopped by Perez.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- New Hampshire tallied a 5-3 shot advantage after halftime to level the total shots at 7-7.
- Hartford finished with a 7-2 edge in corners.
- Guarente and Hewlett both had a team-high two shots for the 'Cats.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- This is the third of four consecutive road games for New Hampshire.
- UNH split a pair of games last weekend with a win at Siena College and loss at Boston University.
- The Wildcats entered Sunday's game with a perfect 7-0-0 record in America East conference openers under head coach Steve Welham.
- The 'Cats outscored the opponents 17-1 in those seven games, only one of which was on the road (2019 at UMBC).
