'Cats Persevere to Defeat Colgate and Quinnipiac

Smith Backbones UNH With a Pair of Double-Doubles
HAMILTON, N.Y. – Kennedi Smith (The Woodlands, Texas) recorded two double-doubles to backbone the University of New Hampshire volleyball team to a 3-1 victory against both Colgate University and Quinnipiac University at the Ellis Rowland Memorial Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
UNH improved to 8-3 overall, which is the Wildcats' best start through 11 matches since the 1997 squad went 9-2.
New Hampshire defeated Colgate, the host school which entered the match with six consecutive wins, by set scores of 26-24, 27-25, 18-25, 25-16. After a 30-minute break, the 'Cats returned to Cotterell Court and dispatched of QU (25-16, 31-29, 21-25, 25-20).
Smith tallied 13 kills and 18 digs – both team highs – against Colgate and followed that with 11 kills and 13 digs vs. Quinnipiac. In the two matches, she recorded 24 kills (3.00 per set) and 31 digs (3.88 per set). Smith's other numbers included three service aces, three blocks and 28.5 points (3.56 per set).
UNH placed second in the tourney with a 2-1 record. Hannah Petke (Rancho Santa Margarita) and Abby Sullivan (Methuen, Mass.) were the the Wildcats' representatives on the All-Tournament Team.
UP NEXT: UNH travels to Towson, Md. next weekend for the Tiger Invitational. UNH plays Loyola (Md.) on Sept. 21, then the Wildcats play both NJIT and Towson on Sept. 22.
NEXT HOME MATCH: New Hampshire's next home match is Oct. 11 against Binghamton University. It is earmarked as a Dig Pink fundraiser, and pink pom poms will be given away to fans.

SATURDAY'S TOP 'CATS
•Petke was UNH's leader in kills (27), blocks (11) and points (34.5) and had a .303 hitting percentage; she averaged 3.38 kills/set, 1.38 blocks/set and 4.31 points/set.
•Sullivan finished with 19 kills on a .432 hitting percentage and also had 10 blocks.
•Emma Patlovich (Lake Forest, Ill.) averaged 6.75 assists per set with a total of 54. She also had six kills on seven attempts for a .857 hitting percentage.
•Emily Tanski (Plymouth, Mich.), the two-time reigning America East Defensive Specialist of the Week, tallied a team-high 36 digs (4.50 per set).
•Logan Welti (Middleton, Wis.) contributed 28 digs (3.50 per set).
UNH NOTEBOOK
•Tanski climbed past Sasha Scott (1,226) and Alyson Coler (1,231) to No. 4 on the program's all-time digs list with 1,252. Next on the list is No. 3 Alyse Lahti (1,334).
•Smith, who became the 17th UNH player to record 1,000 career points on Sept. 6, increased her total to 1,069.5 with 26.5 more on Saturday.

UNH vs. COLGATE

•UNH won three of the first four points of the match, and after Colgate rallied to tie the score at 4, the Wildcats went on a 3-0 run to take a 7-4 lead.
•With New Hampshire leading 9-8, Smith recorded a kill and then combined with Hannah Crist (Cicero, Ind.) on a block to increase the margin to 12-8 and prompt Colgate to call a timeout.
•Smith tallied another kill out of the break to give the 'Cats a five-point lead, 13-8.
•After the Red Raiders trimmed the deficit to 13-10, Patlovich's attack on the second touch resulted in a kill, then Wren Macaulay (Lake Orion, Mich.) served back-to-back aces to give UNH a 16-10 advantage.
•Colgate went on a 6-1 run to pull within one point and rallied to take a 20-19 lead.
•With the score tied at 23, Petke's kill gave the Wildcats set point but a block by the Red Raiders extended the set.
•Out of a New Hampshire timeout, Smith powered a kill through a pair of blockers and then a Colgate attack error ended the set, 26-24.
SET 2
•Colgate reeled off three consecutive points to build a 9-5 advantage and kept UNH at arm's length until the 'Cats clawed into an 18-18 tie on Smith's service ace.
•Trailing 24-22, New Hampshire fended off two set points on a kill by Petke and a Colgate attack error, and then a third set point on Smith's kill.
•Katie Jablonski (Elburn, Ill.) hit the ball to the floor to give the Wildcats set point, 26-25, and a second-touch kill by Patlovich resulted in a kill, end of the set and 2-0 lead in the match.
SET 3
•UNH won the first two points and rolled out to a 6-1 lead, but Colgate rallied to take a 10-8 lead.
•The home team inched ahead to a 17-13 advantage and extended the margin to 21-14.
SET 4
•A pair of Petke kills and two aces by Welti propelled UNH to a 5-0 lead.
•Trailing 10-4, Colgate went on a 5-1 run to close within 11-9.
•The Wildcats responded with three consecutive points to push the margin to five points, 14-9.
•Holding a 15-11 lead, the 'Cats went on a 5-0 run – Petke had one solo and two assisted blocks in that spurt – to spur UNH to victory.

•Leading 10-9, UNH won three consecutive points to fuel a 6-1 run that extended the lead to 16-10.
•The Wildcats reeled off seven consecutive points – Sullivan had two kills and two blocks – to build a double-digit advantage, 23-12.
SET 2
•Quinnipiac took a 9-6 lead before the Wildcats rallied to tie the score at 10.
•The Bobcats surged ahead 22-16, but UNH responded with a 7-0 run to take a 23-22 lead.
•Both teams fended off three set points before Sullivan gave New Hampshire a 30-29 lead, and that was followed by a QU attack error to end the set.
SET 3
•Trailing 15-14, a 4-0 spurt gave the Bobcats a lead they would not relinquish.
SET 4
•New Hampshire raced out to a 5-1 lead, but QU surged ahead 7-6.
•With the score knotted at 11, the Wildcats won three consecutive points but the Bobcats rallied to level the set at 15.
•Another UNH three-point run, this time ignited by consecutive kills from Erin Hedrick (Montvale, N.J.), gave the designated home team a 19-16 advantage.
•The Wildcats inched ahead, 22-18, and a kill by Smith advanced the score to set point, 24-19.
