Smith Records Two Double-Doubles, 'Cats Fall to Maryland and Princeton

PHILADELPHIA – Kennedi Smith (The Woodlands, Texas) recorded a pair of double-doubles at Friday's Cherry & White Challenge, but the University of New Hampshire volleyball team was defeated by the University of Maryland, 3-0, and Princeton University, 3-1. The matches were played at Temple University's McGonigle Hall.
UNH (4-9) battled Maryland all three sets but fell by scores of 25-17, 25-20, 25-21. The Wildcats won Set 1 against Princeton, 25-22, but the Tigers captured the next three sets 25-17, 25-20, 25-19.
Smith finished the two matches with 28 kills (4.00 per set) and 20 digs. Maddie Wiedenfeld (Omaha, Neb.), the two-time America East Rookie of the Week, tallied 26 kills (3.71/set) and reigning conference Player of the week Gabri Olhava (Mount Prospect, Ill.) had 22 kills.
Emma Patlovich (Lake Forest, Ill.) amassed 72 assists for an average of 10.2 per set. Emily Tanski (Plymouth, Mich.) finished with a team-high 42 digs (6.00/set).

There were four ties and one lead change in the first set.
UNH won the first two points of the match on a pair of kills by Smith.
The Terrapins remained within 1-2 points until finally tying the score at 6.
With the score tied 8-8, the Wildcats won three consecutive points to build an 11-8 lead.
Trailing 14-12, UMD went on a 5-0 run to take its first lead of the match.
A kill by Tanski stopped the run, but only momentarily as the Terps won the next three points to surge ahead 20-15.
The margin extended to 23-17, prompting UNH to call time out.
Maryland won the next two points, however, to close out the set.
SET 2
There were two ties and one lead change in the second set.
Undeterred by Maryland's 13-3 run to close out the first set, UNH jumped out to a 5-1 lead in Set 2 and the Terps called a timeout at 7-2.
Bolstered by three kills by Olhava, the Wildcats extended the margin to 12-4 and that led to another UMD timeout.
The Terrapins responded with five consecutive points as part of a 7-1 spurt that trimmed the deficit to 13-11.
New Hampshire still had a two-point lead, 16-14, when UMD won three straight points as part of a 5-1 run that gave the Terrapins a 19-17 lead.
Out of the second UNH timeout of the set, Olhava's kill made it a one-point margin.
The Terps won the next four points, however, to extend their advantage to 23-18 en route to closing out Set 2 at 25-20.
SET 3
There were five ties and two lead changes in the third set.
After dropping the first two points of Set 3, the Wildcats reeled of consecutive kills by Abby Sullivan (Methuen, Mass.), Wiedenfeld, Smith and Wiedenfeld again to surge in front 5-2.
UMD tied the score at 6-6 and 7-7, but back-to-back kills by Olhava and a Jenny Weston (Canton, Mass.) service ace ignited a 6-1 run that put the 'Cats back in front, 13-8.
Maryland answered with a 5-1 spurt to close within a point, 14-13.
Kills by Patlovich and Smith gave the 'Cats a 16-13 cushion, but UMD repsonded with a 7-1 run to surge ahead, 20-17, and the Terps kept New Hampshire at bay the rest of the way to end the set and match.
NOTES
After hitting .265 in Set 1 and .243 in Set 2, the Wildcats were held to a .037 hitting percentage in Set 3.
