Smith Tallies 16 Kills, 16 Digs in 3-1 loss to Northeastern

DURHAM, N.H. – Kennedi Smith (The Woodlands, Texas) recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 16 digs, but the University of New Hampshire volleyball team was upended 3-1 by Northeastern University in Tuesday night's match at Lundholm Gym.
UNH (4-7) took the first set, 25-16, but the Huskies (5-5) rallied to win the next three sets 25-17, 25-20, 25-17.
Smith led the Wildcats in both kills and digs. Two-time America East Rookie of the Week Maddie Wiedenfeld (Omaha, Neb.) recorded 15 kills on a .342 hitting percentage and reigning conference Player of the Week Gabri Olhava (Mount Prospect, Ill.) contributed 12 kills and four blocks.
NU was led by Athena Ardila (23 kills, .442 hitting percentage) and Hannah Boyd (23k, .404 hitting percentage). Samantha Shupe had a double-double with 45 assists and 15 digs. Gabrielle Eyl finished with a match-high 23 digs.

SET 1
- There were seven ties and four lead changes in the opening set.
- It was tight early as neither team led by more than two points until, with the score tied at 9, UNH reeled off four consecutive points and built a 15-10 lead.
- UNH built momentum, soaring ahead 19-12, to prompt the second timeout of the match – both called by Northeastern.
- The Wildcats continued to charge ahead ending with back-to-back kills by Olhava and Smith to finish the set, 25-16.
SET 2
- There were four ties and one lead change in the second set.
- The Wildcats and the Huskies battled it out at the start of the second set, but UNH took the lead when they went on a 4-0 run to bring the score to 6-2.
- The Huskies quickly caught up and took the lead on an attack error bring the score to 8-7.
- New Hampshire stayed close at 11-10, but kills by Ardila and Boyd helped the Huskies extend the lead to 14-10.
- UNH called its second timeout of the set when the Huskies went on a 4-0 run to extend the margin to 18-12.
- Leading 21-17, Northeastern called a timeout and went on a 4-0 run to finish the set 25-17.
SET 3
- There were six ties and four lead changes in the third set.
- Northeastern took the lead early with two consecutive kills by Boyd, giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
- The Wildcats took the lead on a pair of NU errors that brought the score to 6-5.
- Trailing 8-6, the Huskies reeled off seven consecutive points to jump ahead 13-8.
- UNH went on a 5-0 run to level the score at 13-13. The 'Cats inched ahead 17-15, but the visitors responded with a 6-1 spurt to regain the lead, 21-18.
- A kill from Olhava shortened the deficit to 21-19, but the Huskies were able to pull away and end the set 25-20.
SET 4
- There were three ties and two lead changes in the fourth set.
- Northeastern built an early six-point lead, 6-0, to prompt the Wildcats to call a timeout.
- UNH went on a 7-0 run to push past the Huskies 7-6.
- Northeastern was able to inch away, 14-9
- UNH and Northeastern traded points until the Huskies extended the lead to 20-14 on a series of kills.
- UNH shortened the Huskies' lead to 23-17, but in the end Northeastern closed out the set and match on back-to-back kills by Ardila and Gabrielle Tschannen.
NOTES:
- New Hampshire dominated the first set with a .351 hitting percentage. Smith recorded seven kills on a .500 hitting percentage. Olhava had five kills and hit at a .444 clip. Wiedenfeld also had five kills on a .400 percentage.
- The 16 kills marked a season high for Smith, who recorded her fourth double-double of the season.
