Bentley, Macaulay and Smith Are The Three New Wildcats
DURHAM, N.H. – Holly Bentley (Chelmsford, Essex, England), Wren Macaulay (Lake Orion, Mich.) and Bre Smith (Boonville, Mo.) have all signed to play for the University of New Hampshire volleyball team in the 2019 season. The announcement was made Wednesday afternoon by UNH head coach Jill Hirschinger.
"It's an exciting day for New Hampshire volleyball and our future," Hirschinger said.
Bentley, a 6-foot setter/hitter, is a senior at The Bowells School who began training with England's national team when she was 14 years old. She has competed at the U19 NEVZA the past two years and placed fourth in '17. In beach volleyball this year, she and her teammate placed 13th in Europe for U19 CEV Continental Cup Final, as well as 9th of 32 teams in CEV U20. Bentley has also competed in the UK School Games.
Bentley and The Boswells School finished third in the U-18 national finals last year. In club, she has also played for Tendring in the Women's Super League. Bentley has also competed with Team Essex in Division 1. And as a member of Team East, she finished second in the U16 inter-regionals, and first when she played on the U14 squad.
"We are thrilled to add Holly Bentley to our program," Hirschinger said. "She found us in the recruiting process and it was a fit from the very beginning. Her experience both in the sand and indoor at the international level will elevate our program immediately."
Macaulay, a 5-9 setter, was named a high school Under Armour All-America Honorable Mention as a senior at Lake Orion High School. Her other accolades included All-State Second Team, All-Region and All-Conference as a junior.
"We've watched Wren Macaulay on the recruiting trail for years and have been impressed with her every time," Hirschinger stated. "She is a true student of the game with a very high volleyball IQ. Wren comes from a great club program, sets for one of the best high school teams in the state of Michigan and is very successful nationally in club.
"We're very proud of her high school All-America Honorable Mention award and are excited to add her to our wildcat family," Hirschinger added.
Smith, a 6-1 middle blocker, is a senior at Boonville High School who previously attended Geneseo High School and Ankeny Centennial High School. She has lettered in both volleyball and basketball. Smith's senior accolades included All-District First Team, All-Conference First Team and All-State Academic Team. In 2017 at Geneseo, she broke the school blocks record.
"Breanna Smith stood out to us in Indianapolis at the MEQ tournament, which is one of the highest level qualifiers in the country," Hirschinger explained. "She has great speed and athleticism. We're looking forward to her contribution on the court as a middle and adding her and her family to our program."
New Hampshire competes at the America East Championship tournament when the Wildcats battle the University at Albany in a Nov. 16 (4 p.m.) semifinal at Stony Brook University.
