Smith Records Double-Double in Five-Set Loss at Northeastern

BOSTON -- Kennedi Smith (The Woodlands, Texas) recorded a season-high 15 kills and career-high 17 digs but the University of New Hampshire volleyball team was upended 3-2 by Northeastern University at Cabot Center on Tuesday night.
The set scores were 25-20, 25-21, 28-26, 13-25, 15-12.
It was the third double-double of the season and fourth career for Smith, who recorded a .238 hitting percentage.
Gabri Olhava (Mount Prospect, Ill.) finished with 14 kills on a .243 hitting percentage; she also tallied five service aces – tied for the most by a Wildcat this season – and six blocks.
Emma Patlovich (Lake Bluff, Ill.) finished with 35 assists – one less than her personal best. Logan Welti (Middleton, Wis.), who was named the America East Defensive Specialist of the Week earlier on Tuesday, tallied a team-high 19 digs.
UNH is now 2-9 overall and Northeastern leveled its record at 5-5.

SET 1
- NU inched out to a 4- 1 lead before UNH came back to tie the score at 5 and 6.
- The Huskies won the next five points and the 'Cats never leveled the score the rest of the set.
- Northeastern saw its 23-17 lead dwindle to three points, 23-20, before winning back-to-back points to close out the first set.
SET 2
- This time it was New Hampshire that jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but the home team won 6 of 7 points to take a 7-5 lead.
- UNH responded with a 3-0 run to regain the lead, 8-7.
- The teams exchanged points for ties at 8, 9 and 10 before the Wildcats won consecutive points to hold a two-point advantage, 12-10.
- There were four more consecutive ties at 13, 14, 15 and 16 before UNH went on another 3-0 spurt to take a 19-16 lead.
- A service ace by Olhava moved the 'Cats to set point, 24-19, and after NU fought off two set points, Smith's kill leveled the match at one set apiece.
SET 3
- UNH opened the third set with three consecutive points but Northeastern rallied to tie the score at 4, 5 and 6 before taking a 7-6 lead.
- The Wildcats responded with four straight points to go back in front, 10-7.
- The Huskies went on a 4-1 to level the set at 11, but UNH once again answered with to surge ahead 14-11.
- NU held set point, 24-23, but a kill by Olhava extended the set.
- UNH held set points at 25-24 and 26-25 and with the score tied at 26, the 'Cats closed out the set on back-to-back points from Smith, who recorded a kill and then a block.
SET 4
- Northeastern won the initial five points and rolled out to a 10-1 lead, then sustained a double-digit lead a majority of the fourth set to force a decisive fifth set.
SET 5
- The Huskies won four of the first six points, prompting UNH to call time out.
- New Hampshire tied the score, 4-4, on a combined block by Olhava and Welti.
- NU went on an 8-0 run to take a commanding 12-4 lead in the race to 15.
- The Wildcats rallied within 12-8 on a kill by Courtney Bowman (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), at which point the home team called a timeout.
- UNH inched within 13-10 before NU earned match point at 14-10.
- The 'Cats fended off two set points with Smith's 15th kill of the match and an ace by Patlovich.
- The deficit proved too much to overcome, however, as Amy Underdown ended the set and match with a kill on the next point.
