Olhava Tallies Match-High 13 Kills in Sweep of Siena, 3-0

DURHAM, N.H. -- Gabri Olhava (Mount Prospect, Ill.) recorded a match-high 13 kills to lead the University of New Hampshire volleyball team to Friday night's 3-0 victory against Siena College in opening-day action of the Holly Young Invitational at Lundholm Gym. The set scores were 25-20, 26-24, 25-21.
Olhava tallied 13 kills and made just one attack error on 18 attempts for an eye-popping .667 hitting percentage. She was also credited with two digs, one block and one service ace.
UNH improved to 2-0 at home and 3-9 overall. Siena is 0-9.
In Friday's matinee match, the University of Rhode Island (4-6) won the last two sets to rally for a 3-2 victory against Dartmouth College (3-4). The set scores were 23-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-20, 15-11.

THE DIFFERENCE
- Facing set point, 24-23, in Set 2, the Wildcats won three consecutive points to close out the set 26-24 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
SET 1
- There were six ties and two lead changes in the opening set.
- Siena jumped out to an early 5-2 lead but the 'Cats went on a 9-4 run to surge in front, 11-9.
- The teams exchanged short runs – no more than two points – to advance the score to 21-19 in favor of the home team.
- Siena won the next point, but UNH reeled off four consecutive points – an Olhava kill followed by three Saints' attack errors – to win Set 1, 25-20.
SET 2
- There were 11 tie scores and six lead changes in the second set.
- New Hampshire edged out to a 6-4 lead, but Siena won back-to-back points to level the set.
- With the score tied at 10, the 'Cats won three straight points to take the largest lead of the set – three points (13-10).
- The Saints faced a 19-16 deficit before reeling off three consecutive points.
- UNH surged back in front, 22-20 and was on the verge of winning the second set, 23-21, before Siena went on a 3-0 spurt to earn set point at 24-23.
- UNH called time out and a kill by Smith tied the score. Jenny Weston (Canton, Mass.) served an ace and another kill by Smith ended the set in favor of the 'Cats, 26-24.
SET 3
- With the score tied at 3, Olhava tallied a kill and a service ace to give the Wildcats a 5-3 lead it would not relinquish.
- UNH inched away and Siena called a timeout at 10-5.
- With the score 12-8, kills by Hannah Petke (Ranho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and Sarah Shelton (Ellsworth, Maine) ignited a 4-0 run that extended the advantage to 16-8.
- Siena trimmed the deficit to 19-14 before UNH went on a 4-0 run to close in on match point at 23-14. Bowman, Alexa Markman (Chicago, Ill.) and Weston recorded consecutive kills during the run.
- The Saints would not bow down, however, as the visitors trailed 24-18 but fended off four match points before succumbing on a service error.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- New Hampshire recorded a season-high .252 hitting percentage.
- Olhava holds the team's top three hitting percentages of the 2017 season. Friday's .667 is followed by .391 vs. Bryant University (09/05) and .296 at St. John's (08/26).
- All three of UNH's wins have been in straight sets.
