What You Need To Know:
- The University of New Hampshire men's soccer team will travel to Bloomington, Ind., to take on No. 2 seed Indiana on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 7:00 p.m. at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium in the NCAA Tournament third round. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
- The winner of the game will advance to the quarterfinal round and play the winner of No. 7 seed Michigan State and No. 10 seed Western Michigan.
- This will be the first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament third round for the Wildcats. The 3-0 win over Fairfield in the first round was the first-ever NCAA Tournament victory in program history. The Wildcats won a penalty kick shootout, 4-1, at No. 15 seed Dartmouth in the second round.
- The Wildcats are 13-3-5 overall this season and went 4-2-1 in America East. The Hoosiers are 16-0-5 and went 5-0-3 in the Big Ten. Indiana is the only undefeated team in the nation.
- This is the Wildcats' second appearance in the NCAA Tournament and their first in 23 years.
- UNH went 10-0-3 this season at Wildcat Stadium and 3-3-2 on the road. The Hoosiers are 11-0-1 at home this season.
- This is the 42nd NCAA Tournament appearance for the Hoosiers and the 31st in a row. Indiana has won eight national championships with its most recent being in 2012.
- The Wildcats have outscored their opposition 31-11 and have 12 shutouts. The Hoosiers have outscored their opponents by a 45-4 margin.
- Only twice this season has UNH allowed more than one goal in a game. The Hoosiers have only allowed four goals all season and have not allowed more than one in a game.
- UNH's 0.491 goals against average is ranked fifth in the nation, while the Hoosiers' 0.178 average is the best in the country.
- Graduate student Andrew Pesci has 12 shutouts this season which are third in the nation. Indiana freshman goalkeeper Trey Muse leads the nation with 17 shutouts.
UNH IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT: This will be the fourth NCAA Tournament game in program history for UNH. The Wildcats just recently defeated Fairfield, 3-0, in the first round, and won a penalty kick shootout versus the Big Green, 4-1, in the second round. UNH lost at Brown, 3-2, in overtime in the first round of the 1994 tournament. The Wildcats went 15-5-2 in 1994 and earned an at-large bid to the tournament.
WILDCATS EARN FIRST NCAA TOURNEY VICTORY: Graduate student Robin Schmidt (Cologne, Germany) netted two goals as the Wildcats defeated Fairfield, 3-0, on Nov. 16 at Wildcat Stadium for their first ever NCAA Tournament win. Junior Kristian Piippo (Hønefoss, Norway) also found the back of the net. Graduate student Andrew Pesci (Windham, N.H.) made five saves to post the shutout.
UNH WINS SHOOTOUT: With the game tied at 0-0 through two overtime periods, UNH then won the penalty kick shootout, 4-1, over Dartmouth in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Each team scored in the first round of the shootout as graduate student Willis Griffith (Amherst, N.H.) found the back of the net. After a successful penalty kick by graduate student Dante Lamb (Cape Town, South Africa), the Big Green's shot was saved in the lower left corner by graduate student goalkeeper Andrew Pesci (Windham, N.H.) as the Wildcats took a 2-1 lead to the third round. UNH led 3-1 after the third round with a goal by Bauer, while the next attempt by the Big Green was sent over the net. Graduate student Robin Schmidt (Cologne, Germany) then clinched the shootout victory.
UNDEFEATED AT WILDCAT STADIUM: UNH is undefeated at Wildcat Stadium this season with a 10-0-3 record. The Wildcats are 3-3-2 on the road.
2-0-1 VERSUS RANKED TEAMS: This will be the fourth time this season the Wildcats play a ranked team. UNH defeated No. 22 Boston College, 2-0, on Sept. 1, while the Wildcats defeated No. 20 Dartmouth, 4-2, on Oct. 17, and then tied the No. 17 Big Green, 0-0, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats won 4-1 in a penalty kick shootout to advance to the third round.
WILDCATS EARN ALL-LEAGUE ACCOLADES: Graduate student Robin Schmidt (Cologne, Germany) has been named the America East Men's Soccer Striker of the Year, while UNH also won the Coaching Staff of the Year award. Schmidt, freshman Linus Fallberg (Jonkoping, Sweden) and junior Otto Sahlen (Gothenburg, Sweden) earned All-America East first team accolades, while graduate student Willis Griffith (Amherst, N.H.) was named to the second team. Red-shirt freshman Josh Bauer (Bedford, N.H.) and Fallberg received All-Rookie team honors. Junior Chris Arling (Windham, N.H.) earned a spot on the All-Academic team. Also sophomore Kyle Brewster (New Hampton, N.H.) and freshman Jacob Gould (Exeter, N.H.) earned America East All-Tournament honors.
PESCI OUTSTANDING IN NET: Graduate student Andrew Pesci (Windham, N.H.) is ranked sixth nationally with a 0.491 goals against average, while his 12 shutouts are third. His 12 shutouts are a school record for a season. The team has allowed only 11 goals all year. He is 13-3-5 this year and has a 27-10-5 career record with 19 shutouts.
SCHMIDT LEADS UNH: Graduate student Robin Schmidt leads the team with eight goals and 17 points. He also leads the team with three game-winning goals.
