Williams' Goal Not Enough as Wildcats Drop Matchup at Stony Brook, 2-1
10/8/2017 1:02:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The Wildcats suffer their first loss since September 10th.
STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The University of New Hampshire women's soccer team suffered its first conference loss of the season, and their first loss since September 10th, when they traveled to Stony Brook and were bested by the Seawolves, 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Kaylan Williams (Marion, Ind.) scored early for the Wildcats to give them a 1-0 lead, but the Stony Brook attack was strong enough to score two on the Wildcats, who have allowed less than a goal per game on average this season. They scored the equalizer late in the first half, and then tallied the go-ahead goal with only five minutes remaining.
Senior 'keeper Mia Neas (Old Saybrook, Conn.) stopped six of eight shots faced in the loss, as Stony Brook made a habit of clogging the box with players and capitalizing on rebounds. Neas now has a 10-4-0 record this season.
UP NEXT:
- The Wildcats will stay on the road this Thursday, October 12 as they visit Hartford to face the Hawks at 6 p.m. The Wildcats will return home for one more home game on Thursday, October 19 as they host UMass Lowell at 7 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Two early chances for Stony Brook, as they got two corner kicks in the first five minutes; but good defense by UNH prevented any Seawolf from getting near the service, and cleared the ball away instantly.
- Williams' goal came in the 17th minute, as Gaby Dorsey (Hubertus, Wisc.) played it up to her from just past midfield. Williams dribbled up towards the goalmouth, had a diving player block her initial chance, but recollected it and tapped it past the charging 'keeper.
- Kendra Prince (Ajax, Ontario) almost made it 2-0 in the 30th minute, as she got the ball at the top of the box and fired a shot that sailed just wide.
- Stony Brook finally got a concrete scoring chance in the 34th minute, on their fourth shot on goal as Fanny Gotesson flicked a slow pass into the box, and Rachel Florenz raced to the ball and beat Neas, and deflected it over her head for the equalizer.
- The second half started with a diving save by Neas in the 48th minute to preserve the tie.
- Stony Brook would keep pressing the attack in the second half, with several scoring chances.
- In the 70th minute, Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) attempted to get a scoring chance for the Wildcats, taking on three Stony Brook defenders, falling to the ground several times, but continued to fight for possesion at the top of the box. After a solid 10 seconds of battling, she was eventually dispossesed.
- Stony Brook sent the ball downfield, and a low Stony Brook cross right in front of Neas almost was knocked in, but Caroline Wysocki (Agawam, Mass.) beat the striker there and cleared it out of the box.
- A Stony Brook free kick in the 73rd minute set up another dangerous pass into the goalmouth, similar to their first goal, but the shot sails high.
- In the 84th minute Neas makes another diving stop as Stony Brook continues to pressure the 'Cats defense.
- One minute later, Stony Brook finally broke through, as a ball sent into the box bounced around off of players from both teams, eventually rebounding off a UNH body onto the foot of Sam Goodwin, who shot it immediatly just underneath the crossbar, to give Stony Brook the lead.
