Smith Records First Career Double-Double in 3-1 Loss to Northeastern

Freshman Records Career Highs in Kills (17) and Digs (10)
DURHAM, N.H. – Freshman outside hitter Kennedi Smith (The Woodlands, Texas) recorded her first career double-double with personal bests in both kills (17) and digs (10), but the University of New Hampshire volleyball team was defeated 3-1 by Northeastern University in Tuesday night's non-conference matchup at Lundholm Gym. The set scores were 27-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-20.

The opening set was back-and-forth both early and late with seven ties and four lead changes overall. With UNH leading 10-9, Northeastern reeled off five consecutive points and led 19-14 before the Wildcats made a late surge. The 'Cats went on a 4-1 run to close within 21-19. The score advanced to 23-21 in favor of the visitors before UNH won three consecutive points to take a 24-23 lead and set up set point. NU called timeout and fended off that set point, and then another before closing out the set at 27-25 on Jamie Bredahl's kill.
-2nd set-
Behind the serve of Sara Carlson, UNH went on an early 5-0 run to take a 6-2 lead, and then another four-point spurt extended the advantage to 10-3. The lead grew as high as eight, 17-9, before Northeastern stormed back within 19-17. Consecutive kills by Demi Muses and Gabri Olhava quelled the surge and helped push the advantage to 22-17. An Emily Tanski kill gave the 'Cats set point, 24-20, but NU staved off three set points before succumbing on Smith's kill that ended it at 25-23. Both defenses stiffened in the second set as UNH's hitting percentage dipped from .222 to .188 and NU's went from .289 to .088.

Kristen Walding served the Huskies out to a 4-0 lead as NU won seven of the first eight points and led wire-to-wire. UNH trailed 12-5 but got back into the set with a 5-1 spurt to close within 13-10. The Wildcats trimmed the deficit to one point, 14-13, but Northeastern won the next three points to create a 17-13 cushion. New Hampshire got as close as two points, 20-18, but NU kept the home team at bay the rest of the way to take the third set, 25-20, and a 2-1 lead.

The offenses reemerged as NU recorded a .400 hitting percentage and UNH was at .220, and the teams combined for three lead changes and four ties. The Huskies inched ahead 6-3 and held a 10-7 advantage when two kills by Smith and another by Olhava leveled the score at 10. NU responded with three consecutive points as part of a 10-2 run that gave the visitors a 20-12 lead. The score advanced to match point at 24-18. The 'Cats won the next two points but the deficit proved too much to overcome and Caterina Rosander ended the match with a kill on the next point.
