Muses Records Double Double in 3-1 Win at UMES

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Demi Muses (Orangevale, Calif.) recorded 20 kills and 14 digs – both match highs – to lead the University of New Hampshire volleyball team to Saturday afternoon's 3-1 victory against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore at William P. Hytche Athletic Center. The set scores were 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 25-19.
UNH improved to 13-10 overall and 3-0 against teams from the MEAC. UMES is now 13-12.

The Difference
UNH won the big points to close out the first two sets and finished strong in down the stretch in Set 4 to close out the victory. The Wildcats recorded a .286 hitting percentage in Set 1 and .471 mark in Set 2; in comparison, the Hawks hit at .136 and .158 the first two sets.
-1st set-
There were nine ties, spanning from 5-5 to 17-17. UNH opened strong by winning five of the first six points, but UMES rallied to take a 6-5 lead. The teams traded points until a mini-run by the Wildcats gave them a 19-17 advantage that forced the Hawks to call time out. New Hampshire won the ensuing point and opened a 23-18 lead. UMES closed within 23-20 and fought off three set points to trim the deficit to 24-23, but Olhava ended a long rally with a kill to end the first set.
-2nd set-
New Hampshire took an early 5-2 lead but UMES, behind a pair of Iva Vujosevic service aces, took a 9-8 lead. The 'Cats went on a 4-1 run to inch ahead 12-10. With the score tied at 13, UNH
won four consecutive points to build a 17-13 advantage. The Hawks won five of the next six points, prompting UNH to call a timeout with the score tied 18-18. The 'Cats came out of the break with a 3-0 run to create a small cushion. UMES closed within 22-21, but Olhava recorded a kill on two of the next three points to push New Hampshire to set point, 24-22. Muses and Kennedi Smith (The Woodlands, Texas) combined for a block to give the 'Cats a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five match.
-3rd set-
There were eight ties at 1 through 8 before UMES went on a 5-1 spurt to build a 13-9 lead. The home team extended the advantage to 24-17. The Wildcats staved off five set points to close within 24-22, but a kill by Mere Serea sent the match to a fourth set.
-4th set-
UNH led 4-3 when back-to-back kills by Muses and Severtson, followed by Smith's service ace, extended the margin to 7-3.The home team won the next two points but the 'Cats responded with a 4-0 run, which included a kill, ace and assist by Muses, to build an 11-5 advantage. UMES won four of the next five points to close within 12-9. New Hampshire regained momentum as Olhava's back-to-back kills ignited a 4-0 spurt that advanced the score to 16-9. UNH called time out when the Hawks closed within 19-16, and Severtson recorded a kill to stop the surge. Two points away from winning the match at 23-19, Petke sent a ball down on the Hawks' side and the combination of Muses and Smith recorded a block to end the set and match.
