DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) scored her seventh goal of the season as the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team downed the University at Albany, 1-0 on Senior Day, Sunday afternoon at Bremner Field.
The Wildcats remain undefeated in conference play (3-0-0) and improved their overall record to 5-5-3. The Great Danes dipped to 6-6-1 overall and 1-1-1 in conference.
Murphy scored the game's only goal in the 11th minute on a feed from junior Kelsey Pratt (Milford, N.H.). Pratt laid the ball off to Murphy on the right side where she ripped a shot bottom left past the keeper's outstretched hands.
Senior Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.) rifled four shots and controlled the pace of the game as usual. Along with the goal, Murphy also recorded five shots, three on net. Junior Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) made four saves for her fourth shutout of the season, improving her record to 5-5-3.
The Great Danes were led by sophomore Vivian Vega who accumulated five shots. Junior Caitlyn Paltsios finished second in shots with three. Senior Alana Brennan made three saves in the loss, dropping her record to 6-6-1 this season.
New Hampshire was strong defensively, allowing minimal chances to find their way on net. The backline of sophomore Kendra Prince (Ajax, Ontario), classmate Jackie Feraco (Holden, Mass.), senior Kirsten O'Neil (Hampton, N.H.) and freshman Maggie Grigely (Simsbury, Conn.) pushed UAlbany pressure into the corners most of the game. UAlbany held a 17-14 shot advantage but only four were on target.
With the 1-0 lead at halftime, the 'Cats held their defensive prowess throughout the second half as well. The Great Danes took 14 of their 17 shots in the second half, including a 5-2 second half corner-kick advantage.
In the 62nd minute, UAlbany had two chances, back-to-back, blocked by Prince in the middle.
The Great Danes almost scored the equalizer in the 74th minute on a header attempt on the back side that hit the right post and was cleared away by the Wildcat defense.
New Hampshire remains the lone team to record three victories through conference play. The team will play at Cowell Stadium on Oct. 8 (7 p.m.) against the University of Massachusetts Lowell for the Think Pink game.
