Michael Shanahan, a grad student from Dover, N.H., qualified for the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship with a 12th-place finish at the NCAA East Preliminary Round at the University of South Florida on May 24.
Michael's best of three marks in the hammer throw measured 218 feet, 8 inches. He recorded a distance of 208-9 on his first attempt, then made his NCAA-qualifying throw. He fouled on his final throw.
This was Michael's third time competing at the East prelims, and is the first time he advances to the NCAAs.
Michael was named the 2018 America East Championship Most Outstanding Field Performer earlier this month when he broke the conference record in the hammer throw at 220-9 -- it was the fifth career America East title. He also placed fifth in the shot put and eighth in the discus.
One week later, Michael won the hammer throw at the New England Championships with a throw of 227-3.
Michael set the school record of 227-5 in the hammer throw April 14 at the UNH Wildcat Invitational.
Michael had a very successful indoor season in which he earned All-America status with a seventh-place finish in the weight throw at the NCAA Championships. He won that event at both the America East and New England meets leading to the NCAAs.
