Kelly Harty netted her second goal of the season
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team skated to a tie against Union College on Friday evening at M&T Bank Center, finishing in a 1-1 draw.
The 'Cats took an early lead in the first period when senior captain Kelly Harty (Billerica, Mass.) collected the rebound off a shot from junior Sydney Leonard (St. Bonifacius, Minn.) in front of the Union net, giving UNH the 1-0 advantage just 3:16 into play.
Neither team connected in the middle frame, leaving the Wildcats' 1-0 lead in place. Junior goaltender Sedona Blair (Eden Prairie, Minn.) stood tall in the second period, stalling the Garnet Chargers' offense by stopping all 12 shots faced.
With 6:11 left to play in the third, Union's Natalie Andelova got one past Blair from the face-off dot while on the power-play knotting the game at 1-1. Neither team broke through in the closing minutes of the frame, sending the game to overtime.
Following an overtime period that saw the Garnet Chargers outshoot the 'Cats 5-3, the game ended with a 1-1 score, officially going down as a tie. UNH found the first advantage of the shootout when freshman Aurora Kahlert (Maple Ridge, British Columbia) beat Union's Monja Wagner in the second round, but goals from Klara Kenttala and Emma Fulawka in the third and fifth rounds, respectively, helped the Chargers to a 2-1 shootout victory in five rounds.
In the tie, Blair stopped 33-of-34 shots faced, good for a .971 save percentage.
Following both her goal in the opening frame and her empty net goal against Assumption (Oct. 4), Harty logged goals in back-to-back games for the first time in her career.
