'Cats Split Matches in Day 2 of Harvard Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team split two matches in the final day of the Harvard Invitational on Saturday. The Wildcats were edged 3-2 by Harvard University and then closed the tourney with a 3-0 victory vs. Stonehill College.
The set scores at Harvard were 25-20, 23-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-13. And then against Stonehill, it went 25-17, 25-18, 25-20 as the Wildcats went 2-1 in the tournament to move to 5-2 overall.
Millie Grove (Warrington, Pa.) tied her career high of 10 kills in the match vs. Stonehill; her other stats included three block assists and a service ace. Senior captain Kelly Kaufmann (Raleigh, N.C.) followed with six kills and five blocks, including one solo. Lindsey Kriendler (Houston, Texas) also had six kills.
Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) was the primary setter with a match-high 24 assists; she also had five digs and two kills. Miray Su Keskin (Ankara, Turkey) led all players with 12 digs.
In the five-set duel, Hannah Serbousek (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Marisa Armer (Bradenton, Fla.) both tallied a match-high 16 kills. Kaufmann finished with 10 kills and six blocks. Alysa Wright (Wayne, Pa.) and Meredith Hohnbuam (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded seven and six blocks, respectively. Camryn Honn (Overland Park, Kan.) led all players with a career-high 31 assists and also had 12 digs. Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn.) finished with a match-high 25 digs.
Kaufmann and Ezgi Karabulut (Ankara, Turkey) were the two UNH selections to the All-Tournament Team.

- UNH returns to action Sept. 8-9 at the James Madison Dukes Invitational. The Wildcats play Cal Poly (10 a.m.) and Virginia Commonwealth (4 p.m.) on Friday and then James Madison on Saturday (2 p.m.).
- New Hampshire's next home match is Jill Hirschinger Day on Saturday, Sept. 23 (6 p.m.) against Dartmouth College.
vs STONEHILL
SET 1
- With the score tied 3-3, UNH won three consecutive points to take a lead it would not relinquish. Armer began the run with a kill and then combined with Gabby Smith (Carmel, Ind.) for a block.
- The Wildcats edged ahead 9-5 but SC won the next three points to close within 9-8.
- The Skyhawks had another chance to tie the score when they served down 11-10, but Armer's kill sparked a 4-0 spurt that extended UNH's lead to 15-10.
- New Hampshire stretched the advantage to six points at 19-13 and 20-14, then pulled ahead 23-15.
- Grove and Kaufmann combined for a block on set point to end Set 1, 25-17.
SET 2
- The 'Cats never trailed in Set 2; there were tie scores at 1-1 and 2-2, but not again the rest of the set.
- Leading 8-6, UNH edged further away with three consecutive points for an 11-6 advantage.
- The 'Cats did not lead by more than six points in the set until a 3-0 spurt extended the margin to 23-15.
- Stonehill trimmed the deficit to 23-18, but then consecutive kills by Kaufmann and Groves ended Set 2.
SET 3
- Stonehill led for the first time by winning the first point of Set 3 and then build a 4-2 advantage.
- UNH won the next three points to surge in front, 5-4, and the 'Cats did not trail the rest of the way, although the score was tied four more times (at 5, 6, 11, and 14).
- After the Skyhawks won three straight points to tie the score at 14, UNH went on a 4-0 run fueled by a kill and block by Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.).
- The 'Cats edged away, 22-16, before SC replied with a 3-0 run.
- UNH led 23-20 when Stonehill lost the final two points of the match on a service error and attack error.

- UNH has a 3-0 lifetime record against Stonehill.
vs HARVARD
SET 1
- New Hampshire built leads of 4-1 and 7-3 before Harvard rallied to take a 14-13 lead and inch away at 18-14.
- The Wildcats closed within 20-19 but the home team won the next three points en route to taking Set 1, 25-20.
SET 2
- UNH took a 4-2 lead but the Crimson went ahead 6-5.
- The score advanced to 14-13 in favor of Harvard with neither team winning more than two consecutive points.
- Hohnbuam's kill started a 3-0 run that put the 'Cats back in front, 16-14.
- Harvard won the next two points to knot the score at 16, then the teams exchanged points to advance the score to 20-20.
- Another kill by Hohnbaum and ace by Wright put UNH back ahead, 22-20.
- The teams once again traded points, which allowed the 'Cats to capture the set, 25-23, on a kill by Serbousek.
SET 3
- Harvard built an 8-5 lead before UNH went on a 6-1 run to take an 11-9 lead.
- Still holding a two-point advantage at 15-13, the Wildcats reeled off four consecutive points – two on aces by Shattles – to extend the cushion to 19-13.
- The lead grew to eight points, 24-16, on Kaufmann's kill.
- The Crimson fended off four set points to trim the deficit to 24-20 but then the ;Cats ended Set 3 on a block assist by Kaufmann and Karabulut.
SET 4
- Harvard jumped out to a 4-0 lead but saw it disappear on a 5-0 run by New Hampshire that included kills from Kaufmann and Serbousek.
- The Crimson answered with a 5-1 run to go back in front, 9-6.
- Trailing 10-7, the 'Cats won four consecutive points – the first and last of which were on combined blocks by Hohnbaum and Wright – to reclaim the lead, 11-10.
- Harvard surged back in front, 13-11, only to see UNH tie the score at 14.
- The Crimson reeled off four consecutive points to build an 18-14 lead and inched ahead at 21-16.
- UNH responded with a 5-1 lead to close within 22-21 but the home team won the next three point to end the set and level the match, 2-2.
SET 5
- In the race to 15, UNH built a 5-0 lead but Harvard replied with a 5-0 run to level the score.
- Back-to-back kills by Wright and Hohnbaum gave the 'Cats a 9-8 lead.
- The Crimson went on another 5-0 run, however, to surge ahead 13-9.
- The Wildcats recorded consecutive blocks to trim the deficit to 13-11, but then lost the next point on a service error.
- UNH fended off two set points to pull within 14-13, but Harvard won the next point to end the set and match.
