150+ Student-Athletes and UNH Athletics Faculty Participated in the Annual Volleyball Tournament
DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team hosted its annual Dig 4 a Cure event, formerly known as Volley 4 Holly, in partnership with the American Cancer Society on behalf of UNH Athletics and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Originally titled, Volley 4 Holly, the event was started in 2004 to raise money for former UNH volleyball player Holly Young as she endured a three-year battle with Ewing's Sarcoma – a rare form of bone cancer. Sadly, she passed away in 2008 and the event was held every year in her honor before the COVID-19 pandemic put the tradition on pause.
The event returned this spring for the first time since 2019 with a new name, Dig 4 a Cure, to honor Holly Young and also Cathy Coakley, a former athlete, coach, and coordinator of student-athlete development at UNH. Coakley passed away in March 2019 after a long battle with cancer and was a cherished member of the UNH athletics community.
The annual tradition was brought back by volleyball head coach Christopher Feliciano, who knows how important the end-of-year celebration is to all those who participate. "First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude to the entire UNH athletics family for participating in Dig 4 a Cure," said Feliciano. "It was a great way to honor the memory of both Holly Young and Cathy Coakley while raising money for The American Cancer Society."
One of the most anticipated events of the year for the student-athletes and field house staff at UNH, over 150 participants came out to play volleyball at Lundholm Gymnasium as members of the volleyball team organized the matches, refereed, and kept score from the sidelines. SAAC played a large part in the planning and execution of the tournament in partnership with the volleyball program as they joined forces to reenergize one of the cherished traditions wtihin UNH athletics.
After a round of pool play, a playoff bracket, and a championship match between members of the men's hockey team and the men's club volleyball team, the men's hockey players came out victorious to win the first-ever Dig 4 a Cure.
Each member of the winning team received a UNH volleyball t-shirt to commemorate their victory and earned bragging rights until next spring. All proceeds from Dig 4 a Cure went to the American Cancer Society as a day full of friendly competition, music, friends and food picked up right where it left off in 2019.
