Rainey, Sheppard Combine to Shut Out St. Francis Brooklyn in 1-0 Win

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Redshirt freshman Sally Rainey (West Lebanon, N.H.) and grad student Cat Sheppard (Nesconset, N.Y) of the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team combined to shut out St. Francis College Brooklyn in Sunday's 1-0 victory at Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Rainey played the final 73:42 of the game and made two saves to earn the win in her collegiate debut. Sheppard exited at 16:18 and was also credited with two saves. UNH broke the scoreless tie on an own goal in the 77th minute.
SFC goalie Klil Keshwar stopped three shots and the Terriers recorded two team saves for a total of five saves.
UNH improved to 1-1-0 and St. Francis College Brooklyn is now 0-1-1.

FIRST HALF
- UNH generated its first scoring chance in the seventh minute, when grad student Gudrun Haralz (Kópavogur, Iceland) redirected a centering pass off a short corner low to the middle of the cage that was grabbed by Keshwar.
- In the 11th minute, Trystan Thompson-Cotterell's shot from 20 yards caromed off the crossbar.
- The Wildcats' second corner kick produced a dangerous scoring chance in the 16th minute. The service by sophomore Meghan Guarente (Sewell, N.J.) from the left corner to the top of the goalie box was headed back by junior Ella Dudley (St. Augustine, Fla.). Classmate Keegan Mayer (Summit, N.J.) struck a left-footed half-volley over Keshwar, but a SFC defender headed the ball over the crossbar to deny the goal.
- In the 27th minute, Jess Rodriquez's low shot 12 yards out from the right post was snared by a diving Rainey for her first career save.
- In the 31st minute, grad student Maddy Warren (West Covina, Calif.) right-footed a blast from the top-right corner of the box low to the near post that Keshwar pushed wide to keep the game scoreless.
- SFC had an 8-7 shot advantage in the first half that included 4-3 shots on goal.
- The teams combined for 10 corners, including six by the 'Cats.
SECOND HALF
- Defense controlled play in the final 45 minutes as the teams combined for eight shots (three on goal) and three corners.
- In the 48th minute, the Terriers' defense blocked UNH shots by juniors Emily Bini (Guilderland, N.Y.) and Alivia Kelly (Pembroke, Mass.).
- Haralz, with her back to goal, trapped a throw-in along the right endline, turned and her centering pass was redirected into the goal by a SFC defender at 76:32 to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
- In the 81st minute, Warren raced past a defender to run onto a long thru ball and her shot from the top of the box was stopped by the oncoming Keshwar.
- The Wildcats controlled the rebound and Guarente's shot, also from the top of the box, was caught by Keshwar to keep the margin at one goal.
- St. Francis College Brooklyn earned a corner with one minute remaining but UNH's defense did not allow a shot the rest of the way to preserve the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- New Hampshire finished with a 12-11 shot advantage that included 5-4 on goal.
- The home team recorded a 7-6 edge in corners and had a slight edge in time of possession (53%).
- SFC was whistled for 16 fouls in comparison to seven for the Wildcats.
- The Terriers were issued three yellow cards and UNH two.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- This marked New Hampshire's first combined shutout since a 5-0 home win against Marist College on Sept. 5, 2019.
- The Wildcats recorded eight clean sheets last season.
- Sheppard's streak of consecutive minutes played ended at 2,368:15; the streak began Feb. 28, 2021 and spanned 26 matches.
- The last time Sheppard was not on the field was Feb. 24, 2021, when she exited a 5-1 victory against Merrimack College with 20:42 remaining
- Freshmen Elaina Grenz (River Edge, N.J.) and Maddie Kolb (Tolland, Conn.) made their collegiate debuts.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 1-0-1 lifetime record against St. Francis College Brooklyn.
