Wildcats Defeat Siena, 2-1, in Home Opener

DURHAM, N.H – Graduate student forward Maddy Warren (West Covina, Calif,) capitalized on a penalty kick in the second half to lift the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team past the Siena Saints, 2-1, on Thursday evening at Wildcat Stadium.
Junior back Ella Dudley (St. Augustine, Fla.) found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Sally Rainey (West Lebanon, N.H.) made her first career start and made a career-high three saves.
The Wildcats' record improves to 2-1-0 overall. The Saints fall to 0-2-1 overall.

FIRST HALF:
- The Wildcats had their first scoring chance in the 21st minute when Meghan Guarente (Sewell, N.J.) serviced a corner kick to the front of the net. The ball entered the crowd and became loose soon to be successfully cleared by Siena.
- UNH outshot Siena 11- 5 in the first half including four shots on goal for the 'Cats and one for the Saints.
SECOND HALF:
- UNH opened scoring in the 49th minute when Warren ripped a shot to the upper right corner of the net on a penalty kick to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead.
- Siena bounced back in the 52nd minute tying the game at one when Iona Snape tapped the ball into the low right side of the net.
- Just five minutes later in the 57th minute, Guarente sent the ball directly to Dudley off a corner kick. Dudley knocked the ball to the back right side of the net giving UNH a 2-1 lead.
- Rainey kept the 'Cats in the lead in the 63rd minute when she made a sliding tackle to deny a Siena scoring opportunity
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- New Hampshire finished with a 19-7 shot advantage that included 10-4 shots on goal.
- The home team recorded a 9-2 edge in corners and had a slight edge in time of possession (56%).
- Siena was whistled for eight fouls in comparison to six for the Wildcats.
- The Saints were issued two yellow cards and UNH one.
UNH NOTEBOOK:
- Warren and Dudley both scored their first goals of the season during this match.
- Warren's penalty kick goal was the first successful PK in her third cap as Wildcat.
- UNH has a 6-1-2 home-opener record under head coach Steve Welham.
