Mayer's Double OT Goal Gives UNH 2-1 Win vs. Vermont

DURHAM, N.H. -- Freshman Keegan Mayer (Summit, N.J.) scored her first collegiate goal in double overtime to lift the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team to Sunday afternoon's 2-1 victory against the University of Vermont at Wildcat Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Cat Sheppard (Nesconset, N.Y.) recorded seven saves and freshman Anna Hewlett (Webster, N.Y.) sent the game into extra sessions with her first career goal in the 87th minute.
UVM goalkeeper Lydia Kessel also finished with seven saves, including two in the first overtime and one more in the second extra session.
UNH advances to 5-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in America East. Vermont is 0-2-0 both overall and in the conference.

FIRST HALF
- In the 11th minure, UNH's senior midfielder Casey Peterson (Round Hill, Va.) fired a shot that missed wide left.
- Two minutes later, Mayer missed a header high and right of the frame off a service into the box by classmate Ella Dudley (St. Augustine, Fla.).
- In the 16th minute, UVM's Karen Wallace scored off a rebound into the open net after a save by Sheppard on the initial shot by Cricket Basa.
- In the 30th minute, Sheppard picked up another save as UVM's Jill Brody was streaking down the middle a right-footed a shot on goal from the top of the box.
- Mayer attempted her second shot of the day with a low hard dribbler, towards the left side of the goal in the 34th minute.
- UNH finished the half with three shot attempts with one on net, while UVM recorded with six shots, five of which were on net.
SECOND HALF
- In the 51st minute, a shot attempt by UNH senior Francesca Picicci (North Massapequa, N.Y.) from the left wing was saved by UVM's Lydia Kessel.
- Four minutes later, and service into the box found Angi Salvie behind UNH's defense, but Sheppard came off the line to block the shot and the ball trickled wide of the right post.
- One minute later, UVM's Karen Wallace's shot off a corner kick was wide right.
- In the 66th minute, UVM's Jill Brody's header was saved by Sheppard.
- In the 87th minute, Hewlett tied the game at 1-1 when her header went off the outstretched fingertips of Kessel into the upper-left corner of the net. Dudley, with the service into the box from the left wing, and Picicci were credited with assists.

OVERTIME
- In the 95th minute, a shot by UNH freshman Alivia Kelly (Pembroke, Mass.) was saved by Kessel.
- Off a corner kick in the 98th minute, freshman Logan Nicholson (St. Augustine, Fla.) headed the ball wide left.
DOUBLE OVERTIME
- In the 105th minute, Mayer ended the game by firing a shot into the upper-left side of the net. The scoring sequence started on Hewlett's corner kick into the box. UVM got the initial touch on a header, but Mayer controlled the ball and blasted a rising shot from 15 yards to give UNH a 2-1 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- UNH had 19 shot attempts, nine of which were on goal. UVM had 10 shot attempts, eight of which were on goal.
- UNH led in corners with 12, while UVM was awarded six.
- UVM picked up three yellow cards while UNH was given one.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- New Hampshire improved to 5-0-0 at Wildcat Stadium this season.
- The Wildcats are 2-0-0 in overtime this season; the 'Cats previously upended Maine, 1-0 in overtime, on March 7.
- UNH is 3-0 in games decided by one goal.
- Sheppard's seven-save effort was one less than her career high of eight recorded one week earlier at UMass Lowell.
- Dudley recorded her first career point with the assist.
- Picicci now leads the team with eight points and is tied for the lead with two assists.
- Peterson, Picicci and goalkeeper Cam Droste (Lone Tree, Colo.) were honored in a Senior Day ceremony prior to the game.

SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH improves to 22-9-7 lifetime against Vermont with a second consecutive win against the Catamounts.
- Seven of the last 11 meetings have been decided by one goal -- UNH won six of the seven – and two others in that span ended in a draw.
