Sheppard Tallies Career-High Nine Saves in 1-0 Loss at Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior goalkeeper Cat Sheppard (Nesconset, N.Y.) recorded a career-high nine saves as University of New Hampshire women's soccer fell 1-0 to Binghamton University at the Bearcats Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Sheppard made six of her personal-best nine saves in the first half.
Binghamton got on the board in the 59th minute when Stefania Piantadosi snuck the ball past Sheppard along the near side post. This proved to be the game-winner for the Bearcats.
Binghamton goalkeeper Haylee Poltorak recorded three saves for the shutout.
The Wildcats fall to 5-2-0 on the season and 2-2-0 in America East contests. The Bearcats improve to 2-1-0 both overall and in conference play.

FIRST HALF
- Sheppard made six saves in the first half as the Bearcats recorded a 7-1 shot advantage.
- One of the most dangerous looks Binghamton had was in the final seconds before halftime. Sheppard made back-to-back saves from five yards out after she failed to corral the first attempt.
SECOND HALF
- Binghamton nearly broke through in the 58th minute but the shot was misfired left of the net after a centering pass from the outside.
- In the 59th minute, Piantadosi won the race to the ball with freshman Alivia Kelly (Pembroke, Mass.) and beat Sheppard on the near post to score.
- The Bearcats earned a penalty kick in the 70th minute after Olivia McKnight was tripped in the box.
- Victoria McKnight took the penalty kick and fired it to the left side of the net. Sheppard dove to her right to make the save and keep the score 1-0.
- UNH recorded one more shot on goal the rest of the way, but Poltorak denied freshman Emily Bini (Guilderland, N.Y.) in the 87th minute to preserve the one-goal advantage.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Binghamton led with 12 shots, 10 of which were on target. UNH took three shots, all on target.
- The Wildcats did not attempt a corner kick while Binghamton took four.
- UNH only got whistled for seven fouls compared to 15 for the Bearcats.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- The Wildcats only two losses this season have come in their only two road games.
- UNH is now 3-1 in games decided by one goal.
- Sheppard's nine saves gave her a new personal best after reaching eight saves against UMass Lowell in the team's only other loss this season.
