'Cats Fall 3-0 In America East Semifinal to Binghamton

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Gabri Olhava (Mount Prospect, Ill.) recorded six kills and a match-high four blocks but the University of New Hampshire volleyball team was ousted from the 2017 America East Championship with a 3-0 loss to Binghamton University on Friday evening.
The set scores were 25-20, 25-19, 25-23.
New Hampshire, which had won four consecutive America East tournament titles, ends the season at 13-14. Second-seeded Binghamton extended its win streak to six matches to improves to 12-14 and advance to Saturday's championship game.
Olhava tallied her six kills on a .286 hitting percentage, which was second on the team to Courtney Bowman (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), who finished with five kills and a .364 hitting percentage; she also had two blocks.
Kennedi Smith (The Woodlands, Texas) recorded a team-high 12 kills, four digs and three blocks. Emily Tanski (Plymouth, Mich.) led the Wildcats in digs with 12. Mali Jereczek (Green Bay, Wis.) and Emma Patlovich (Lake Bluff, Ill.) split the setting duties with 13 and 12 assists, respectively. Molly Wotton (Dover, N.H.) equaled Olhava's block total with four.

THE DIFFERENCE
- Binghamton recorded a .252 hitting percentage while limiting New Hampshire to a mark of .155.
- Gabby Alicea paced the Bearcats' attack with a match-high 17 kills and Sarah Ngo was credited with 36 assists.
SET 1
- There were seven tie scores and two lead changes in the opening set, where UNH recorded a .135 hitting percentage in comparison to Binghamton's .297.
- Trailing 3-2, the Bearcats went on an 8-1 run to build a 10-4 advantage.
- New Hampshire responded by winning seven of the next eight points, including five straight, to tie the score at 11.
- With the set tied at 16, the Bearcats reeled off four consecutive points, which prompted the Wildcats to call their second timeout of the set.
- UNH inched within 21-18 on a kill by Smith and Binghamton attack error, but the designated home team called time out and surged ahead 24-19.
- The Wildcats fended off two set points but Lexi LaGoy's kill then ended the set.
SET 2
- There were six ties and four lead changes in the second set with UNH hitting .107 and the Bearcats .219.
- UNH led 7-6 when Binghamton went on a 6-2 spurt to take a 12-9 lead that would not be relinquished.
- The Bearcats led 15-11 at the media timeout and extended the advantage to 19-13, which prompted a New Hampshire timeout.
- A kill by Smith and assisted block by Smith and Olhava trimmed the deficit to 19-15, but Binghamton won four of the next five points to surge ahead 23-16.
- UNH inched within 24-19 but then served the ball into the net to end the second set and give the second seed a 2-0 lead in the match.
SET 3
- There were four ties and four lead changes in the third set, in which UNH recorded its highest hitting percentage of .219.
- With UNH leading 5-4, the Bearcats reeled off seven consecutive points to take an 11-5 lead, at which point the Wildcats called time out.
- New Hampshire inched within 12-8, then Olhava recorded a pair of kills and an assisted block with Hannah Petke (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) to spark a 6-2 run that leveled the score at 14.
- Binghamton answered with five straight points, but the Wildcats did not go quietly.
- UNH won seven of the next eight points to retake the lead, 21-20. Petke recorded a kill and service ace in the latter part of the surge.
- With the score tied at 21, Alicea recorded back-to-back kills.
- After a Binghamton service error lifted the Wildcats within 23-22, the Bearcats moved within match point on LaGoy's kill.
- A kill by Smith prolonged the match, but the third set ended the same as the second – on a Wildcat service error.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- The end of the 2017 season also marks the end of UNH volleyball careers for seniors Bowman and Katie Rebrovich (Burleson, Texas).
