Severtson Orchestrates 3-0 Victory against Stony Brook

DURHAM, N.H. – Keelin Severtson (Delray Beach, Fla.) recorded 32 assists to direct the University of New Hampshire volleyball team to a .258 hitting percentage and 3-0 victory against Stony Brook University on Sunday afternoon at Lundholm Gym. The set scores were 25-19, 25-15, 25-22.
UNH improved to 9-8 overall and 2-0 in America East with its second straight-set sweep of the weekend. SBU lost its third consecutive match to fall to 4-13, 0-2.

The Difference
The Seawolves entered the match with a .202 hitting percentage, which ranked second in the conference, but New Hampshire's defensive effort of 33 digs and 13 blocks limited the visitors to a .096 mark; the 13 blocks matched UNH's highest total of the season. In contrast, the Wildcats entered the match hitting .190 but recorded a mark of .258.
-1st set-
UNH won the first point on a kill by Courtney Bowman (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and never trailed. SBU forged ties at 1, 2, and 3, but did not pull even thereafter. Kills by Muses and Severtson gave the 'Cats a 5-3 lead, and then a run of four consecutive points pushed the advantage to 9-4. With UNH leading 10-6, the teams exchanged points to push the score to 16-12, then back-to-back kills by Olhava pushed the margin to 18-12 and forced the Seawolves to call time out. New Hampshire held its largest lead of the set, 21-14, before SBU won four consecutive points to close within 21-18. The Wildcats closed out the set with a 4-1 run.
-2nd set-
UNH jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Severtson's serve and led 5-3 when the Wildcats won six consecutive points on Carlson's service to build an 11-3 advantage. Stony Brook never got closer than five points (13-8) the rest of the set. Smith recorded six kills and a .444 hitting percentage in the middle set, and New Hampshire hit a match-best .385 in this set.
-3rd set-
Stony Brook took its first lead of the match, 2-1. With the Seawolves leading 5-4, three consecutive UNH attack errors gave the visitors an 8-4 lead. Moments later, two more attack errors pushed SBU's advantage to 13-7. New Hampshire trailed 16-11 but regained momentum by winning five consecutive points to level the set at 16. The score advanced to 21-20 in favor of the Seawolves on McKyla Brooks' kill, but she then hit her dangerous jump serve into the net to tie the score 21-21. UNH won the next three points to earn match point, 24-21, and, after a UNH serving error, Muses gave UNH the win with her seventh kill.
