Holmes Scores Twice in 17-6 Loss at UConn

STORRS, Conn. – Senior captain Izzy Holmes (Seattle, Wash.) scored two goals but the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team was defeated 17-6 by UConn at Morrone Stadium on Monday afternoon.
Holmes finished with two points, as did Mackenzie MacEachern (Bedford, N.H.) and Allie Connerty (Norwell, Mass.), both of whom tallied a goal and an assist. Grace Curran (North Salem, N.Y.) and Katie Taranto (Brewster, N.Y.) scored UNH's other goals.
UNH starting goalie Maria Hagan (Downers Grove, Ill.) made eight saves and allowed 17 goals in 56:36 of play; she finished with a team-high and personal-best six ground balls, as well as a caused turnover. Danielle Martineau (Gilford, N.H.) made one save and corralled a ground ball in the final 3:24 of the game. Emma Alpaugh (Darien, Conn.) was credited with five ground balls.
UConn was led offensively by Kate Shaffer (four goals, one assist), Kyra Place (three goals) and Susan Lafountain (three goals). Starting goalie Landyn White stopped six of nine shots on goal in 42:11. Georgia Hoey made two saves and allowed three goals in her 17:49 relief appearance.
UNH is now 1-3 and UConn improved to 3-1.

FIRST QUARTER
- UConn scored the first three goals of the game and never relinquished the lead.
- Laprise struck first at 13:50 and then Sorenson and Lafountain scored 24 seconds apart at 8:33 and 8:09, respectively.
- Cutting down the right side of the fan, Curran caught the feed from Allie Connerty (Norwell, Mass.) and fired a shot high inside the near post to lift UNH within 3-1 at 5:51.
- Goals by Morgan Carter and Lafountain extended the Huskies lead to 5-1 at 2:35.
- Taranto converted a free position from the top-left with a low, sidearm shot to trim the margin to 5-2 at 1:18.
SECOND QUARTER
- For the second consecutive quarter, UConn opened with a 3-0 run as the Huskies built an 8-2 advantage.
- Holmes split three defenders down the middle of the fan for an unassisted goal at 6:25 that lifted UNH within 8-3.
- The Huskies ended the quarter on a 4-0 run to advance the score to 12-3.
THIRD QUARTER
- UConn scored the only four goals of the third quarter to extend the margin to double digits and take a 16-3 lead through 45 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
- UNH outscored the home team 3-1 in the fourth quarter.
- Connerty curled to the front of the net and placed a shot into the bottom-left corner of the net to open the fourth-quarter scoring at 12:44.
- Shaffer's fourth goal of the game made it 17-4 at 7:05.
- MacEachern raced past a defender through the fan and then around a second defender to cut to the front of the net for a goal that pulled UNH within 17-5 at 3:50.
- From the top-left of the fan, MacEachern slipped a pass low to Holmes and she fired a low shot into the net to close the scoring with 28 seconds remaining.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UConn finished with the edge in shots (39-18), shots on goal (26-14) and draw controls (19-6).
- UNH had the advantage in ground balls (16-14) and turnovers (11-13).
- The Wildcats were a perfect 18 of 18 on clear attempts while UConn was 18-for-19.
