The Matchup vs. UMBC
UNH has a 19-14 lifetime record against UMBC, but the Retrievers have won each of the last three matchups; the 2017-18 season marked just the second time UMBC swept the season series; that previously happened in 2007-08. Prior to last season, UNH had won 6 of 7 meetings with four decided by less than five points. New Hampshire has a 16-12 record against UMBC under head coach Bill Herrion.
The State of New Hampshire
* UNH has a 4-23 overall record that includes 1-13 on the road and 2-12 in America East (1-6 in conference road games). The Wildcats are coming off Wednesday night's 62-58 road win against UAlbany.
* The victory ended an 11-game losing streak that spanned Jan. 12 to Feb. 21.
* New Hampshire's previous win was a 68-64 win against UMass Lowell at Lundholm Gym on Jan. 9.
* That win also ended an 11-game losing streak, the team's longest since a stretch of 13 consecutive games spanning Nov. 2013 to Jan. 2014; that squad finished that year 6-24 overall, 4-13 America East.
* Following Saturday's game at UMBC, the Wildcats end the regular season with Senior Day on March 5 at home against Maine.
* UNH has scored more than 62 points twice in 14 America East conference games – Feb. 16 vs. Stony Brook (66-64 loss) as well as the 68 in the aforementioned win against UMass Lowell. The Wildcats have scored below 60 points in 9 of 14 conference games (that includes four games less than 50).
Developing the Playoff Picture
* UNH will advance to the America East Championships with the combination of two wins AND two Maine losses. That would lift the Wildcats to four conference victories, which would surpass the Black Bears' three.
* The teams play each other in the March 5 regular-season finale at UNH's Lundholm Gym. Maine plays Binghamton on Saturday (11 a.m.).
* Maine wins the tiebreaker vs. UNH if both teams finish 3-13, either by head-to-head record (if UNH wins, then loses AND Maine loses, then wins) OR conference road record (UNH loses, then wins AND Maine wins, then loses).
* If UNH, Maine and Binghamton finish in a three-way tie for seventh place with four wins (UNH wins twice, Maine wins once, Binghamton loses twice), then Binghamton wins the tiebreaker. Then, the tiebreaker between Maine and New Hampshire would be decided by the fourth tiebreaker, the NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET). Maine is currently at 330 and UNH New Hampshire is 346.
Last Time Out
* UNH made 3 of 4 free throws in the final 11.5 seconds to secure a 62-58 win at UAlbany on Wednesday night (Feb. 27). The Great Danes, who trailed 59-52 with four minutes remaining, closed within 59-58 with 27 seconds to play. UAlbany missed a potential go-ahead 3-pointer with 14 seconds, then Chris Lester hit the front end of the 1-and-1 bonus to push the Wildcats' lead to 60-58.
* The home team missed another 3-point shot with three seconds remaining. The rebound went out of bounds, giving possession to New Hampshire. Josh Hopkins was fouled on the inbounds play and made both foul shots with 0.9 on the clock to seal the victory.
* Lester made 4 of 5 3-point attempts to finish with a career- and game-high 15 points. Marque Maultsby matched his career high of five assists; he also had 10 points.
* All five UNH starters played at least 30 minutes; Jordan Reed played all 40 and had a season-high four assists. Four of five scored in double digits and combined for 55 of 62 points.
* The Wildcats limited UAlbany to a .286 second-half field goal percentage (6-21) that included 10.0 percent (1-10) from 3-point range.
