Maultsby Scores Career-High 15 Points in 56-53 Loss at UMBC
3/2/2019 3:44:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BALTIMORE – Marque Maultsby (Raleigh, N.C.) scored a career-high 15 points, but UMBC made a furious second-half comeback to record a 56-53 win against the University of New Hampshire in Saturday afternoon's America East men's basketball matchup at the UMBC Event Center.
Maultsby, who made three 3-pointers, also finished with career highs in steals (four) and minutes (38). Chris Lester (Barrington, Ill.) recorded 10 points and seven rebounds. Jordan Reed (Lucas, Texas; 10 points) and Nick Guadarrama (nine points, nine rebounds) also made three 3's.
UNH is now 4-24 overall and 2-13 in America East. Despite the loss by the University of Maine on Saturday, UNH has been eliminated from conference playoff contention.
UMBC is now 19-12, 11-5. The Retrievers, who trailed by 17 points midway through the second half, were led by Joe Sherburne (15 points), Brandon Horvath (12) and K.J. Jackson (10).

* The home team went back in front, 5-3, but Maultsby hit a 3-ball from the top of the key to give the Wildcats a 6-5 lead.
* With the score tied at nine, Lester hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key for a 12-9 UNH lead at 12:39.
* UMBC surged ahead 15-14 at 8:47, but Guadarrama became the fifth Wildcat to hit a 3-pointer in the first half for the seventh -- and last -- lead change of the half, 17-15, at 8:20.
* Maultsby's next 3-ball gave the 'Cats their largest lead of the half, 22-17, at 5:51, then his layups at 4:23 and 2:58 reestablished five-point leads.
* The Retrievers trimmed the deficit to one point, but then Jordan Reed (Lucas, Texas) hit his second 3-pointer of the half, this time from the right corner, with 1:01 on the clock and Lester beat the buzzer with a long 3-ball on the right wing to send UNH into halftime with a 32-27 lead.
SECOND HALF
* Reed hit another 3-pointer on the opening possession and Lester followed with a layup to extend the advantage to double digits, 37-27, at 18:56.
* Leading 37-30 out of the media timeout (15:49) with five second on the shot clock, Guadarrama stroked a long 3-ball through the net to ignite an 11-0 run that pushed the lead to 48-30 at 12:49.
* UMBC made 3 of 4 free throws to inch within 15 points, then Hopkins drove the left baseline and made a floater to give the 'Cats a 50-33 lead at 10:07.
* The Retrievers roared back to close within 50-47 at 2:50.
* Guadarrama hit a 3-pointer to end UNH's scoring drought (7 minutes, 42 seconds) and push the margin to 53-47 at 2:25.

* Maultsby missed a 3-point shot, but then stole the ball at the other end of the court with 1:23 remaining.
* The Wildcats committed a turnover, however, with 1:05 to play and Horvath's layup made it 53-52 with one minute to go.
* The teams exchanged turnovers on offensive fouls, which gave UNH possession with 12.8 seconds on the clock.
* UMBC immediately fouled Hopkins on the inbounds play to send him to the foul line, shooting 1-and-1. The first free throw rolled off the front of the rim. The Retrievers grabbed the defensive rebound and called a timeout with 10.3 remaining.
* UMBC advanced the ball into the frontcourt and Jose Placer hit a 3-pointer from the right wing to give the home team a 55-53 lead at 2.4 seconds. It was the Retrievers' first lead since 15-14 at 8:47 of the first half.
* UNH called its last timeout, but the Wildcats' long inbounds pass was intercepted by Horvath. He was fouled, sending him to the foul line with 1.3 left. Horvath made the first free throw to make it 56-53. His second attempt went off the right side of the rim, but time expired before the 'Cats could attempt a desperation length-of-the-court 3-point attempt.
