Pogue, Fogarty Double-Doubles Not Enough as ‘Cats Fall to Maine in Semifinal
3/4/2018 5:42:00 PM | Women's Basketball
PORTLAND, Maine – Seniors Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Kat Fogarty (Westminster, Mass.) both finished in double figures in points and rebounds, but the no. 5 seed University of New Hampshire fell short in the America East semifinal, losing to the regular season champion, no. 1 seed Maine, by a score of 64-48.
Pogue finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds, giving her two double-doubles in as many games, while Fogarty finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, her first double-double since the season-opening contest at Xavier.
The 'Cats were held to just 29% shooting from the floor, starting off slow shooting 8-35 in the first half, and couldn't catch up with the fast-paced Maine offense. Despite a 20-point lead for Maine in the fourth, the Wildcats still battled to the final whistle, going on a few runs and outscoring Maine in the final quarter.
The Wildcats fall to the Black Bears for the third time this season, and for the second year in a row in the America East Semifinals, after a 61-52 no. 4 seed Maine upset last season over no. 1 UNH.
HIGHLIGHTS
Brittni Lai (Irvington, N.Y.) finished with a team-high 17 points and two assists, following up her 22 point performance in the quarterfinal. Lai also had a steal in the contest, and shot 6-for-18 from the floor.
Aliza Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) had six points off the bench, the highlight of which was a corner three that she hit while taking a foul, completeing the four-point play at the line in the second quarter. Simpson also chipped in with three rebounds and two assists.
Along with their double-doubles, Pogue had a steal and an assist, while Fogarty had two steals and shot 4-6 from the free throw line, and hit two three point shots down the stretch.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Maine opened up the game with a 13-4 run to lead 15-6 at the end of one quarter. A defensive battle to start, the first four minutes of the game only saw two baskets. Pogue had six rebounds alone in the first quarter, five of which came off a Maine miss. Turnovers and rebounds were close to even in the first, and only one foul was called.
UNH opened the second with a 8-0 run with Simpson hitting two shots, including a big corner three while falling down from the contact, and making the ensuing free throw. Despite the run, Maine kept the lead into halftime scoring 16 points in the second quarter.
The third quarter started off all Maine as the Black Bears jumped to a 40-22 lead in the first three minutes. The Wildcats found some rhythem and got some stops in the middle of the quarter to cut the Maine lead to 12, but that's as close as they would get in the period. The Black Bears held UNH to just one field goal in the third quarter and led 47-28 through three quarters.
An 11-0 run for Maine between the end of the third and start of the fourth put the Black Bears up by 20 with five minutes to go in regulation. UNH would try one more final push, making a seven point run on two straight baskets from Pogue, and a hoop and harm from Lai, who made the and-one. Maine hunkered down and got some defensive stops and made four consecutive points on free throws to maintain the large lead.
